My wife backed up our old 88 4x4 in 4 wheel hi range on the dry
blacktop and turned the wheels to the locks. It made one loud
metallic bang like something let go on the front end. It sounded like
someone hitting the wheel with a 2lb hammer and it rang very clearly.
Now it clunks down the road no matter if its in 4x or 2x. What do
you think she busted? I am not too well versed in the inner workings
of 4wd.

well that was a pretty stupid thing to do..... my guess is one of the
tripod joints split. stick your head under the front end and look and
see if the CV axles are intact. if they are, jack the truck up and
turn the wheels with your hands to isolate the noise.
