been getting a strange noise, sounds similar to the belt squeak but did the penny trick few months back and that sorted it, the noise also sounds more metalic and is coming from the right hand side of the engine, i thought bearings where giving up on the water pump but after listening for a while not sure weather its from the water pump or alternator, was making the noise just on tickover but is now only doing it when accelerating, sprayed wd40 on the inside of the belt next to the alternator pulley and it stopped the noise a little, any ideas what the problem could be?

If you suspect alternator, disconnect the fan belt and see if the noise goes away.
You'll be alright to run it for a couple of minutes.

that wouldnt really help on the 300, there's only 1 belt, and it runs water pump and alt, all it would do is prove it was one of them, but not which one.

screwdriver again the suspect article, and put it to your ear, should work as a kinda engineers stethoscope.

had the belt of this morning, water pump is fubared, pulley has about quarter inch of play!!
been searching on the net for a video on replacing water pump but cant find one, anyone be able to post a link to a video?
