Done a lot of reading up and have found that my landys cam belt set up has been modified by landrover to get over the associated problems. I have purchaced my own cam belt kit due to not being able to afford to have it changed at a garage and was wondering if their was any one out there who lives near me that wouldn't mind too much (After being bribed with either Stellar or cups of tea) to pop round and help me out if I get stuck when Ive taken it all to bits:eek: . I already have the info from the following web address to help me 300TDI cambelt and Kit - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum but have never done this before. I'm 1 Mile from J23 of the M1 in sunny Shepshed. Im going to atempt it next weekend and I'll make sure theres plenty of chocy Hob Nobs in... wink wink:D
 
ere disco i know a couple of people up here who are allergic to tools who have followed those instructions without a problem - read it properly, work slowly and all will be well
 
I will read all the way through lots of times and also take my time. The only thing that scares me more than my cam belt snapping is me taking it appart to do it when ive never done it before and making a reet pigs bum hole of it. Would be nice to know that theres some one fairly close by to lend a hand if I balls things up tho. I have seen engines turned over using a ratchet before trying with the starter motor. Could you use that method on a diesel engine too?

Dunt panic, mark everything up with tipex, it's probably been done anyway. I've done triilions of belts and it's the easiest I have seen, I took mine to bits when I got it to make sure the belt had been done eventhough the guy said he did it.

The bolts in the timing casing are all different lengths so stick them in a bit of carboard.

The crank bolt is tight so get a bar and jam it on the body and give the engine a jab wif the key, watch it dunt start tho, and make sure you get it tightned up well afterwords since this could lead to cam belt problems later on.

Anytime you turn an engine always best to turn it clockwise, on some it can fook up the belt tentioners, anyway once the belt is on and dubbed up turn it over with the crank pully back on and the bolt wif yer ratchet a couple of times and make sure yer marks line up and the belt is still tight.

dunt be a woose get into it.

this is the exciting part - make sure the breaker bar is a long one and that it's well jammed or you'll be knocking on yer neighbours door asking for it back

It does sound a bit ugly when you do it right enough.

Been there done that :rolleyes:

Doing the 300's timing belt today (bought the kit with all tensioners etc) and doing the 200 next weekend :D

Just take your time and like has already been said ........ mark everything and lay everything out in the oreder it was taken apart ;) ................... do this and you should have no bother :D
 
Make sure you've got the right kit; there is an early one and a late one, one with a lip on the pullys one without, the change over was 1997.
 
My 1997 disco came without a service history, so I'm gonna change my belt next weekend too weather permitting. The guides I've read (Difflock, LR4x4 and Haynes) all give different ways of getting the big pulley off, but how the heck do you get it back on tight enough after changing the belt? I fancy the bolting-of-a-metal-bar-to-the-pulley method, but can't see any bolt holes in it!

That was going to be my next question. "How do you do it up without turning the engine over" Mind reader:eek: Still no takers for me chocy Hob Nobs then? :)
 
Didn't get to do my belt today :(

Took one look in me tool boxes and realised they were well overdue a sort out so did that instead :p

Will do it next weekend now i think :rolleyes:
 
It was all Stellas idea. The big whore bag! Just got to fit some low riding springs to my pimped out disco and i'll be well away. What sort of seat covers should I fit??? Furry lepod skin or black and white cow effect?

If that's a photo of yer stellar wif shades on, yer better go fur the cow effect, less chance of her bein noticed.

Hope yev got it ripped to bits and rebuilt wif a new belt.
 
That's a nice link at the start of this thread but is there another guide for JUST doing the belt? (not the tensioners)

EDIT: Ignore that - it's flippin obvious and to be fair, I might just do the tensioners anyway now I've re-read the guide. I was under the illusion that I could change the belt along without taking off the crank pulley. This is of course not possible..
 
Might seem a stange question to you lot.. but how much would a garage charge to change the cam belt (if I bought the kit seperate)? I understand from the forums etc that its a 2hr job... I don't fancy doing it myself -New to LR and never done more than top up oil myself: I'd love to learn, but not on my own, and living up on Anglesey in North wales - I'm all alone. :(
 
The main dealer quoted m £450 (tee hee), the local independent 4x4 specialist quoted me £230 inc vat & parts (no aircon disco) poss more if you have air con.

Any mechanic can change a belt on one of these, dunt need to be a landie one.

If you aint got the tools or the ability then look for a garage that will do it at a reasonable price, or go the back door way and ask one of the mechanics who does homers.
