If you are getting a garage to do the work then it will cost more than the disco's worth
I though I would have to do it once when I had a 3.5efi RR so I got some books and 'swotted' up on how to do it, I have done a few four cylinder cars and I could see It's not a difficult job with the V8, I worked it out it would be two very long days for me on my own, no bad as LR wanted two days. In the end I sold the car.
You may want some help so get a mate to lend a hand that will make the replacement a lot easer. Nice if you a a big garage or outside and it's sunny. Well worth doing and it will last another 100k plus miles.
You can get a Cam kits from people such as Kent Cams or Piper Cams.

thanks, no way can I do it myself (ikea furniture is about my limit!). I've got a mate who's a mechanic and a garage I could borrow for a day at a push though. Could go against all the advice & not change the cam & chain- just the lifters & maybe rocker arms?

I've done the 3.5 carb engine in my Range Rover, Long time ago but it was straightforward, nothing you couldnt do yourself. Just pay attention to the manual when re-fitting the valley gasket or you will get leaks.
But do you realy need a cam? Often the ticking noise is just worn followers, rockers and shafts, but then again, its half of the job done changing followers and you wouldnt want to be stripping it twice for the cam later.
I agree with the earlier post, change the cam chain at the same time, they are quite cheep.

Had a read through me haynes this morning and it didn't make my headache any worse... I thought at least the heads would need to come off?
Doing a bodge and just changing the tappets on the ticky side looks sooo tempting- just a matter of removing the inlet manifold/air cleaner/rockers and pull them out? It doesn't get used much so that would at least buy me some time
Going to change the ex.manifold before I get ahead of myself anyway, with any luck I might get a 25 quid fix!
