So, the 2006 one Ive had all weekend (Defender 90) isn't the price I thought it was, its £8500 and 60k miles. I can buy on auto trader a 100k 2007 model (later engine, 6 speed box) that would need the same doing up but would be a better start vehicle as its a 110.

Is the later engine good - I thought the TD5 was a good engine - whats the latest engine like?

I know Ill start a posting war and Im a simple guy - I want a nice lady to take the missus away hiking and camping in - and convert the back to where we stay.... She will drive it 2 miles a day to the station so it will do not so many miles a year....
 
TD5 is great. Good strong engine, reliable if looked after and bundles of power, also pretty easy to fix and work on at home.

TDCi is more refined like a modern car but more complicated and more difficult to work on IMO

If going for a TD5 I would suggest a 2002 - 2005, especially 04 and 05 as they come in the lower tax bracket of £230 where as the 06/07 TD5s are £500+

The later ones arnt even any better on fuel!? Bit confused here, Do they have a better stereo?
 
Still a brick shaped heavy diesel. MPG is never going to be brilliant, though I did manage to squeeze 32mpg from my old 90 after a few mods. Don't expect more than around 30 - 35mpg really even on the new ones, remember they are 2 tonne plus with the aerodynamics of a lead brick. My 110 returns around 22mpg on average though its heavy, lifted and tuned.

Depends on what you want. The TDCI (Ford Transit engines) (2007 - 2016) is more refined, more modern interior, better heater, better A/C (if fitted), quieter and generally more 'car like'. Great if you want it for longer distance daily driving.

The TD5 (1998 - 2007) is still quite agricultural but still miles better (for daily driving) than the older ones. My favourite tbh, powerful engine, reliable, decent MPG with a few mods and you don't drive with a lead foot, makes a nice noise (better than the 4cyl TDCI), still pretty easy to work on with a spacious engine bay and relatively cheap parts.

Stereo is old school headunit, don't like it take it out and buy a new one. Same for speakers simple 10cm speakers in the dash, easily upgradeable to 13cm speakers.

I would suggest test driving a couple TD5s and a couple TDCis (2007 - 2011 is a 2.4, 2012 - 2016 is a 2.2)

I was joking about the stereo :) Everything else you say sounds valuable - thank you Sir! I have a TD5 90 right now but its gonna go back to its owner and Ill wait for a 110 TD5 when the time is right. +1 Beer if we ever meet!

Am having to make the same decision as you JonnyAwesome. I've just sold my 2000 TD5 110 and am after a newer 90, would prefer the newer (07-) model but have to choose carefully to be sure not to get stung for tax. The road tax cost seems to depend on what it was registered as, seems like the more 'luxurious' models XS and County (with rear seats) are in the higher bracket with the 'standard' trucks typically around £250/yr.
 
Nope. Mines an XS spec and £230. My 90 was a CSW and £280.

06/07 of most cars is around £500

Car tax isnt based off trim spec.
 
Oh - the whole commercial thing - I know nothing about that! So I went on the DVLA website and I admit the only option of a 2007 Defender Diesel 2.4 was a stationwagen - however Im just a normal bloke and so I don't know where the commercial 2 seat no rear windows model would fit. I will convert the back into a sofa/flip down bed, a double seat and a beer fridge that also takes milk and chicken (keeps the GF happy) - however I like the TD5 engine, the MPG on the later one doesn't seem better and I'd rather not pay the government an extra £300 for a 6th gear that doesn't save me fuel and a stereo that appears to be from a Ford Fiesta. I only earn a medium salary and this weeks performance of the Government doesn't inspire me to pay more tax....

Also - being almost useful with a spanner I can put my own rear windows in later where I want them - so if I get a panel back one (whatever thats called) and fit my own windows - I believe all you need is a can opener.... Ill be on a winner. Anyway don't know... Advice is good!
 
Easiest way is when you see one you like, do a dvla vehicle check on the reg plate and it'll tell you the tax cost.

I use an app called vehicle smart
 
They did sell a few TD5s in 2007 so not all 2007 machines are TDCi engined. Usually the TD5s have a recessed bonnet and the TDCis have a bulge to accommodate the 'taller' engine. Unless of course someone has put a later bonnet on.
