Hi all, first post and I'd like to ask a simple question, being a relative noob :)

I'd like to blank off my EGR on my 2001 TD5. On the TD5 alive site I saw two different kits (actually 3), and I'm not sure which one I need to get. As far as I understand since my engine is from 2001, I should get the EU2.

Am I correct?

Hmm..its a tough one.

Do i point you in the direction of the 'Introduce Yourself' section kindly or do i just tell you to do a ****ing search you lazy bastard?
 
I've been searching for quite a while, but I'm still not sure because ... erm ... I really don't know my stuff. Usually I ask someone Itrust to do the dirty work and pay them :) Not because I'm lazy, but because I think I'll screw up.

There are two kit types available, depending on weather your car has the EGR cooler (heat exchanger) present on the Exhaust manifold to Inlet manifold recirc pipe. Early EU2 cars from 1998>2001 never had a EGR cooler fitted, where as the later type EU3 2001>2007 model Td5's did. The only exception to this rule would be the 2004 model Discovery Td5 with Manual Gearbox, as the outgoing models never had an EGR cooler fitted. If in doubt, please check your engine before ordering.

Unfortunately I barely understand a word of that paragraph. Well I do, but I don't know which is which. How do I recognize whether I have and EGR cooler or all the other parts...

I know you might be slapping your forehead and / or shaking your head ... but I really have no clue :( Hence my asking for the basics ... Sorry! Not a lazy bastard ... just a clueless one who doesn't want to get the wrong stuff.

As for introductions: Got a Defender 90 a couple of years back since I've always been fascinated by them. Really love it, and I'm looking to start doing some engine mods just to give it a bit more oomph...

Should I head out to the intro thread too?
 
You will most probably require the EU2 kit. You can identify which one by looking at the pipe from the exhaust manifold over the front of the engine block to the EGR valve. If it is a plain pipe then it is the EU2, if it has a box with pipes connected to it at the front of the block, then it is the EU3 with cooler.
The mod itself is fairly straightforward, but you may have problems removing the Allen key studs at the front of the exhaust manifold. I had to remove the manifold to get these studs out.

EGR Bypass Kits - Alive Tuning

They know there stuff and produce kits, albeit a little expensive. But the link below is a fitting guide and will let you know which kit you need.

My advice, when you do come to fit one. Get the WD40 on the bolts at least a week before hand and let it soak in. Mine was a right pig as one bolt wudnt budge for ages.

Use an extension on your allen keys and make sure it sits square or you will bugger up the bolt head, I know because i've been there.
 
Yes I'm looking at Alive tuning, but not sure whether to get the EU2 or EU3, hence why I posted the pic to check which one I need. I read the file you quoted before but its still not too clear to me which one I need. And since my defender is 2001 model, I've got the dilemma. I strongly suspect its the EU2, since most of the stuff on the Defender is the old version (i.e. old dashboard, old MSB ecu ... so I'm thinking the EGR would be the EU2). But as they assumption is the mother of all f**k ups ...

Photo does not show the crucial bit! If there is no box on the pipe in front of the engine block, (behind the viscous fan) then it is EU2. I have same year defender TD5 with old dash etc. :cool:

You see the copper pipe with ridges that runs along the front of the engine block?

The right side(as you look at the photo) Comes from the head and goes along said pipe to the EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) valve.

Older models so 99-02 i think, look like the second picture.

02 and onward look a bit different because they have a heater block in the middle of the pipe bolted onto the head.

You are right. The second picture in the link shows an EU2 motor and the picture in this post an EU3. However you can use an EU2 de-EGR kit on an EU3 engine because that is exactly what I did. I'm also pretty sure that you could use an EU3 kit on an EU2 engine.

All you need to do is blank the EGR pipe at the exhaust manifold and replace the EGR valve body. This is exactly the same procedure on both engines the only difference being that there are a valve and a butterfly requiring two vacuum modulators in the EU3 EGR valve body and on the EU2 EGR valve body there is only a valve and one vacuum modulator.

Phew! It sound more complimacated than it really is. If you are removing the EGR valve body then remember to unplug the electrical connectors to the vacuum modulators and leave them in place other wise the ECU continues to open and close them which can affect brake vacuum. If you do decide to remove the modulators as well make sure the vacuum piping is properly sealed off.
