Hi again guys I am getting fed up of having to give my p38 double heat to start it every time I have done the hot start fix that worked very well for about six months then I started having problems with it cranking over for ages so started giving it double heat and when I do this it fire's up instantly.
so I fitted new bocsh heater plugs £40 and fuel filter changed the spill off pipes but it was exactly the same I was then told that the plugs weren't heating quick enough and then I fitted delphi heater plugs £110 still the same now I have just changed the battery to a bigger cranking one £100 and yet it is still the same please please any idea's it drives fine once it is started I dont mind spending on it if it fixes it but hate throwing money at it for nothing
cheers all

First thing to check, assuming the glowplug light actually comes on, is that you have 12 volts at the glowplugs while the glowplug light is on. If the voltage is low, check the glowplug relay located in the engine ECU box just behind the battery.

10.6 volts is not normal, I would look at the glowplug relay, the contacts may be knacked.

Just had a look and all the contact look ok I have got 12.5volts going in to the relay do you think it's worth me getting a new relay??

Yes. The contacts can look OK but be high resistance when a high current is flowing through them. What voltage at the battery terminals are you getting when you have the glowplug light on (when you have 10.6V at the glowplugs themselves)?

I've got exactly the same symptoms. Have changed the glow plugs and bought a new battery : no change.
Where is that relay ? Is it in the fuse box ?

Read the thread, it's in the engine ECU box immediatly behind the battery. Before you ask, no not the fuse box.

No it's not in the fuse box but you are warm. Try the ECU box behind the battery for volcanic heat. I cannot believe you asked that question.

Thanks data : I had read the thread but in my ignorance was unaware of a relay in that particular box.....just had never looked. That's why I wanted to confirm the box.
Thanks.

Just to let you know.
I was having exactly the same symptoms. Had changed the glow plugs & battery ....no change. I read this thread and went tonight to have a look at the glow plugs relay. I opened the box behind the battery but didn't recognise the relay immediately.
I opened the fuse box and had a look at the relays in there. I changed relay 15 ( ignition key sign) : got in and she started first time. That's the first time that has happened in a long time !
I have not done any checking of what all is fed by relay 15. I just tell you what happened for your info.

Sounds like you need to check your fuse box for signs of burning before it fails completely:eek:
