I've been running my 2.5 DSE without the exhaust heat shield because my mechanic managed to break it and I never got around to replacing it (long story, please don't ask).
Since the BMW engineers decided that it was necessary, I'd like to know if there's any known side effects to running it this way?

Yeah the bits it was put there to protect from heat get hot.

I asked this same question last week as I noticed mine was missing, and while I don't think any problems will occur in the short term - I guess long term the hose directly above it will become brittle and so I will be making a new one soon
