Evening all,

Following my recent issues I have now replaced the in tank fuel pump, along with replacing and adjusting the gear selector. Also put a new battery on for good measure.

Went to start the car, much stronger starting and you can hear it trying to fire, then just before it gets up to speed and is just about to fire up the starter makes a horrible whine, followed by a click, then nothing :(!

Is this likely to be a bad starter motor? Teeth worn down and slipping?

Am I right in thinking the auto doesn't have a flywheel so that can be ruled out? But surely there is an equivalent that the starter latches on to?

Hopefully someone has been in this situation before! Winter just around the corner really want to get the thing going for the other half to go to and from her night shifts in!

Ring gear just like anything else quite a job if it's knackered. Look at the starter first.
 
All motors have a fly wheel other wise how can you spin the engine , unless you got a crank handle :) , not sure about your whine maybe slipping teeth ???
 
I'd read something about it having a flex plate instead of a flywheel :confused:

Not sure what the ring gear is, will have a look at starter. Will it just be the worn teeth or could a different starter issue cause this?

The ring gear on which the starter engages is mounted on a flywheel type plate in place of a heavy flywheel. The flex plate that the torque converter mounts on is mounted aft of that on a spacer.
 
Ok, will look for a new starter and not even try starting in the mean time. If it has any bearing on the situation, it's only done it with the new battery, or the old battery when being jumped? So it's almost as if it's putting too much power down and causing a slip, whereas before there was only just enough power to get the thing going but not quite enough to cause a slip.

Getting that starter motor off was a complete bar-steward on mine. I have a vague (painful) recollection of having to get a seriously long reach socket over the top of the transmission housing to hold a but still at the back because I couldn't get my hands down there. Took me 45 minutes to undo the 3 nuts, from memory. Not pleasant minutes either.
 
Hang on before you remove the starter!
Try something that will seam really stupid, first. Losen the fan belt off and try to start her again. I have been there before with my Disco. I stripped my starter down and serviced it. It made no difference, then I replaced the starter, but still she would not start. I spoke to a friend about this and he said he had a similar problem, and It turned out the alternator had seized up.
I removed the belt and wow she started straight away.
So just check it first as this will give all the symptoms you mentioned.
 
Nobody mentioned the overrun clutch in the starter motor yet, had it play up on the 200 tdi disco engine I put in my 89 classic.
