Hi all again my 2.25d has been down on power the last few weeks but today power right down black smoke when revved accompanied by a chuffing noise from the exhaust what else could that be other than a valve? Should also say pulled the glow plugs and number 4 is much blacker than the other 3. TIA Dave.
Thinking about it I put fuel in a couple of weeks ago then after a few miles it started losing power but that fuel station was closing down when I looked at the pump it said this fuel is not esso so god knows what it was probably a load of crap in the bottom of the tanks as well. The engines been a good one pretty nippy for a 2.25d didn't have much blowback either
I'm starting to think that as number 3 glow plug was a bit sooty too the ones on 1 and 2 were OK i did check it for blow by about 500 miles ago with the filler cap off wasn't any smoke coming out at all. One other thing I have removed the rocker shaft in preparation to lift the head not realising the 5 bolts are head bolts I haven't risked warping the head have I?

There might be a chance that removing the bolts has warped the head but I think it is a small chance. The biggest risk is when tightening the bolts after replacing the head, they should be done in the right order. You don't need to remove the rocker shafted before removing the head.

I think most of the palava of undoing and redoing head bolts in the right order is more about ensuring the head gasket gets compressed evenly. I've removed a fair few heads, and although I redo the bolts back up in the right order, I've never used a torque wrench to do the final tightening, also on old engines, I've always reused the old bolts.

yes, but do the 35ft twice then the 90 twice,no need to change the bolts

no just 90lbsft in total, copmosite gasket will crush as you tighten head so center bolts will be slightly slacker by the time youve got to the outer bolts so you do 30 or whatever once then go over again without resetting torque wrench,youlll find the center bolts turn a little before it clicks again,do same with the full torque ie 90 lbsft

Even though I don't replace head bolts or use a torque wrench, I do check the tightness of the bolts after driving a hundred miles or so.

Excellent thank you all out and new ones ordered. I assume the new ones just tap in and are held on with grease for when you put the head back on? I think it's let a hot spot go before as it's a petrol block and the head face on number 3 cylinder is pitted. TBH glad the gasket failed much better than having pieces of hot spot drop into the cylinder!!!
