prolly knowing my luck.
when i took the oil out today it was silvery black. not white but deffinately darker than it went in and had a silvery colour to it. it looked opaque black on my gloves. is this anything to be concerned about or is it just down to all the water thats in bits of the engine and will clear after first oil change(which i intend to do about 500 miles after it works and can get 500 miles!

Oooeerr....sounds like aluminium oxide to me but cant see where it would come from.
Could be crap from rebuild but i would keep a very close eye on that.
I have seen a similar colur oil from a re-bored block but not from a used block.

it looked a bit like the first signs of water contamination i think but normally it goes coffee coloured
its prolly just the bejesus bieng swept in there from the froggin valve but feck knows!!
so i will be replacing the oil after the big start up, i'm gonna give it a wash with that stuff even though i think its past its sell by.
the last block was totally clean, like new inside. was this due to the lpg or the ptfe fluid that i put in. would the ptfe have speeded up the liner slip? i suspect it happend when the pipe from the air intake to the bit that sits between the heads went as it was garden hose some **** used and i didnt spot it till it went!

Used to have an LPG powered Omega and the oil was as clean coming out as when it went in. No crap in gas like there is in petrol.
Cant see the PTFE stuff making the liners slip....it reduces friction so should make the piston move easier in the bore.
Is it fixed yet???

just been looking for the cause of the profound oil burning and the block has 14 bolt joles where as my old block has ten. the heads are set up for the old block with ten holes. the engine numbers are old block 42d14888a and the newer block(the one i intended to use is 42d01664a.
whats the difference, i assumed they were the same as the numbers are similar. whay does one have less bolt holes. could the lack of bolt holes cause the oil leak.
pots at the front of the engine seem to be covered in oil in the ex manifold, the rear pots semm ok and the oil way is at the font od noth block and heads, they do line up but i'm wondering if it just wasnt tightened enough although i followed rave for the sequence?? would the missing bolts cause the head to be loose and pass oil????
could do with a response soon as i'm off to work at 2 and wont be on till after 10.

Hi Gav...I read that the later engines missed the outer head bolts out and it reduced the failure of gaskets. It is accepted to leave the bolts out. I'll try and find a link to the thread this afternoon.

is the bottom end crossbolted on the new one gav,as im sure the old 14 bolt heads weren,t crossbolted,but if you do use it i have a spare set of small apr bolts and nuts but only torque them up to around 20/25 nm that way like john said it won,t ruin the head gaskets,if you want the eight smaller bolts pm me and i,ll send them down to you free of charge,or chuck a donation in the pot

Just checked the good book and the later V8's have 10 bolts per head. Just use the holes on the head and fit the 10 bolts. Put roses or daffs in the empty holes if you want to!!
I think there are 7 long and 3 short bolts per head.
Nice sunny day over here (For a change) and I have been out in the garden with a nice glass of good stuff:beer2:

hi,glad you sorted out your problems,now you can go out with the caravan and enjoy the rangey,good luck,gemsdaddon,t know if i should say anything,incase of a jynx but everything is ok no leaks at all and everything has been serviced and running nice and smooth,even towed the caravan to and from storage ok

the block IS cross bolted, and it has the flange for the CPS and hole, thats what i cant understand, unless its been worked on or came from a disco or something??? i rang rimmes and they said the heads are fine to go on the block and he's never heard of oil passing the gasket.
my theory is that the gaskets were letting oil into the pots because the bolt holes arent deep enough for the 10 bolts that the newer blocks have??? wonder if most people use arp stud sets and dont see this problem, of course most people who dont feck about with engines much and buy straight from a 'shop' wouldnt even encounter this issue!!

ive got to be honest gav from memory the arp ones i fitted to mine,weren,t as long as the standard strech bolts i took out,the arp ones have a strech thread just short of halfway then about 3mm solid bolt before the rest having a fine thread for the nut and washer,if you have the funds gav get a set because you can tighten them up easier with a torque wrench upto 70lb ft rather than the 90 deg carry on
