alright, this might sound a stupid question, but ive been trying to do a bit of research, but cant find an actual answer,

can you run a hydraulic winch and an overdrive on a series 3???


thif anyone has done this, can you please explain how??

i thought that was the answer, i just didnt know if anyone had overcome this problem some how.

Yes it is possible. Are you thinking of getting a MkII Land-Rover hydraulic winch? I have one of those and the standard pump that comes with it is driven off the back of the gearbox (where the overdrive goes). The aeroparts hydraulic winch pump mounts in the same place. I'm not sure about this but I would not be surprised if some pumps were designed to bolt on underneath the transfer box (where the sump goes) but if any do exist they are probably rare. A more feasible way of getting around the problem would be to find a belt driven hydraulic pump off a scrap JCB or combine harvester etc. and make some brakets so that its driven off the crank pulley on the engine. I think that some military 2 1/4 engines had a double crank pulley (for driving a big generator) which would be just the job. It's common to use a power steering pump to drive the Milemarker hydraulic winch.

I have some scans of the parts catalogue for the MKII Land-Rover winch and a parts catalogue for the Aeroparts winch. I could send some scans of them if you want. Have you come across an owner's manual for the MKII winch by any chance?
 
that would be great if you (fenby1967) could send me them scans please, yeah i was thinking of a landy mk2 winch, after reading that post about it the other week.

i could fit an electric winch, but i was wantung a more period suiting mk2 landy winch, and also i was just curious to see how anyone had done this.

the power steering idea sounds good, i will have a look into this,

I'll send them to you in a few minutes. If you come accross a user manual for the mkII winch could you send me some scans of it?

I had a look in my Series IIA/III optional equipment parts catalogue from 1984 and there is a Hydraulic pump kit listed in there which bolts on underneath the transfer box, which presumably would allow an overdrive to be bolted onto the back of the transfer box.

I'd imagine that the gearbox PTO hydraulic pump would have a higher flow rate than a belt driven pump. Another advantage is that with a gearbox driven pump you can mechanically dissengage the pump so it's not wasting engine power when you're not using the winch. I think a belt driven pump would be the most realistic solution to having both overdrive and a hydraulic winch though. I don't think my Landy would pull an overdrive too well with 7.50 tyres, 100kg of hydraulic winch and a 2.5 NA diesel so I'm not going to bother with an overdrive.
 
i will have to keep checking ebay then. i think i may just give the overdrive a miss and just use the hydraulic pump on Back PTO. also with the PTO setup, can you not put the hi-low lever in neutral and just shift up the gears to get a higher flow rate?? or does it not work like that?

also - a bit of a spin off from this subject, but are 7.50's the same as 235/85 ' s??

I have not got mine up and running yet but I think the system is designed to work in 4th gear, but you could put it in a lower gear for a slower line speed. One of the great things about a hydraulic setup is that you can control the line speed with the hydraulic valve - it's not just an on/off control like electric and mechanical winches. You can also put the transfer box in Low while your winching for self recovery.

I think 235 85 R16s have more or less the same diameter as 750 16s but are a bit wider.
 
(if you haven't already done it) you could just fit RRC/Disco1 diffs in your series axle casings, which give approx the same gearing increase as an overdrive ... which leaves your hole at the back of the g'box free for the hydraulic pump.

You oughter get your speedo recalibrated afterwards but that's about all you have to do ... the only real downside being losing a "super-low" low 1st gear - it just becomes a "quite-low" low 1st gear ...
 
for the period look the fairey capstan winch couold be an option, it looks the biz and it works off the crank
 
watch your thumbs for fook sake! nasty things!

Oh and i have an old aeroparts hydraulic winch if antone wants it. not sure what model it is though. its big and a very odd shape!
 
have you got a pic of the aeroparts winch Tig619?? anddoes it include everything (tank, pump hoses etc...)

i'll have to dig it out its buried in the shed somewhere.
Tank went a while ago along with some hoses. there is the winch, some cable and a spool block.
i have a pto but its for an lt77, with a matching pump but the casing has split.
i will try to get some pics soon.

is that an easy conversion and how does that affect fuel consumption and speed
