Help required please. I’ve had memory failure about the filler neck and which way up it goes. Looks like I also forgot to take any pictures when it came apart. It’s got flat bits so can only go one of two ways. But is it breather pipe up or breather pipe down or does it not make any difference? I feel it should be breather up but the only pictures I can find online look like they are breather down. Anyone know or can whip off the cover thingy and check yours for me. Thanks in advance.

The breather on my Series 2 is located at 3 o'clock when looking at it from the outside of the vehicle.
Thanks for that. That's interesting as with those flats I think I can only do 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock. I'll have to look closer. Anyway that proves it doesn't need to be at the highest point which is what I had convinced myself it should be.

Still battling away. So much stuff going on! I don't think I did any landy at all for the first 6 months of this year while I did last revision with my lad for his GCSE's. A levels now and i'm still his assistant/proof reader/editor. Also he's doing photography so will occasionally come home on a Friday and have to have 100 pictures of the cathedral or something by Monday. It's all go. Deadline for finishing the landy is now his 6th form prom which is mid 2026. No chance.

Primer went on with brush and roller. So did the top coat.

The finish is ok. I know a lot of people get fantastic results with brush and roller but I don't. To be honest I could have done far more prep but considering where it is and the lack of time I have available it's the ideal area to cut a few corners. I'm not even painting all of it. The unpainted area is going to be covered with sound deadening or carpet or something. I did want to do some fancy wooden stuff in there but it's too much time, money and hassle for now.
 
I was hoping to get the vinyl off the dash padding but still be able to use the padding again. I knew it was damaged but I wanted to try to repair it.

These pictures actually make it look a lot better than it is especially round that bit with the round ended, oblong indentation. It just crumbled to pieces there.
 
I've had a roll of foam in the garage for years. I think it's called EVA foam. No idea where it came from but i'm going to use it to cover the dash. It's the same thickness as the original in most places but the edges need a double thickness to get it looking as it used to. Never used contact adhesive before but this stuff is brilliant and supposed to be ok for high temperatures in car interiors.

The adhesive has toluene in it which can react with EVA foam but I seem to be getting away with it so far.
 
Latest dash bits. Still got a bit of fettling and shaping to do before covering in vinyl but definitely coming on. I can't think of a way to replicate the indented oval shape over those three spare gauge holes so will have to live without it. Also I don't think those vents are right for the year but they were completely missing when I got it. The new ones are 3D printed ones from ebay. The heaters don't work on these things anyway so they're just decorations anyway.

Carburettor. What do you do? Best option, send to a specialist and give it the works. Can't really afford it. Change to a Weber. I stupidly want to keep the original one. Buy a Chinese replacement. I hear they can be lots of trouble. I'm going to have a bash at refurbing mine. Last time it ran I can just about remember there was a leak and it wouldn't run for long. Ages ago I bought a refurb kit. It's a Bearmach one and at that time I thought they were better quality than the rest. I believe now they are as bad as all the others. Burlen/Zenith do the proper one but i'm going to make myself suffer with what i've got.

I had given it a very brief clean before but not enough. I've always been way too scared to have anything to do with carbs before but i'm going for it now. Photographed everything coming to pieces and placed the bits in separate little pots.

It's a bit mucky inside but I got it cleaned up. Thought about vapor blasting but didn't get round to it. Then last weekend I was at the classic car show at Lincoln Castle and there's a fella with a stall who does vapor blasting. He's in a village about ten minutes from me. By then I'd already got them to this stage so didn't bother. Maybe next time.

The two defects I know about with these carbs is wear in the hole that the throttle spindle goes through. The hole gets bigger and it sucks air in where it shouldn't. Mine isn't bad there and I can't do anything about it anyway. The other is the castings not being flat so not even fitting together properly and that I can do something about. Read all the advice and did the lapping process with some wet and dry paper on a sheet of glass. You can see from the shiny bits just how out of true they were.

It doesn't even pretend to fit. I could have chopped it about to make it better but it's no good so I had to make new ones.

Not the end of the world I suppose but bloody frustrating when you just think you're going to quickly assemble something. I had a look online to buy new ones but they cost about £5 each. Even if they're a better fit (which they probably aren't) that's still a bit steep. Here's the diaphragm whosname thingy. I really must learn what these bits actually are.

This is the new spring from the refurb kit (top) and the original spring (bottom). Now I appreciate the point of a spring is to be springy but that new one is a much beefier fella than the original. So much so it barely squashes enough to be contained when I put the cover on. Just feels too much to me. I'm going with the original for the time being. What do you think?

<£100 to get something where the components are not mismatched might be a good buy.
I paid more than this for my SU carb rebuild kit.

It's a thought isn't it? I just keep reading about people getting those and then never being able to get them running right. I'll see how many problems I get putting the old one back together and how fed up of it I get. Thanks for the advice Dan.

Well, if the worst came to the worst you could treat a "new" one as a spares kit for the original so it retained its authentic patina of aging?

I make myself more work by wanting to fix everything. I should go route of least resistance and get a new one. I could then keep the old one and faff about with it to my hearts content later on after the landy is back on the road.
