Hello, I have a Series 2 Discovery TD5 and I am loving it. I just love the whole Land Rover experience (just not the bills) Now even though my TD5 has had its fair share of garage time I am still loving it and the Discovery range, I like them so much I am considering purchasing a second hand LR3!!!

Now onto the serious stuff, I have learnt about most of the issues with the Series 2 Disco's but I have not really got a clue about the LR3's. I know about the timing belts but what else am I looking for on a LR3? What work do I have to check has been done on a second hand LR3?

Any help would be very helpful,

@gstuart has a comprehensive list to check, the main one being the front timing belt and tensioners but at the same time the oil pump needs replacing at the very least.
There is a cheap one for sale on the disco3 site, guy has done loads, well serviced but the air compressor has gone and he has give up on it, Gaz also replaced his compressor and if he can do it anyone can

as @biggeeeee has already mentioned , make sure the belts etc have been replaced

they need to be done 7 x years or 105,000 miles, allow 1k for them to be replaced

also very important ref the oil pump, they leak and do fail

check list

full service history

put into access , normal and off road height , ensure the arrow in the display goes out at each level

listen out for the compressor to stop at each height

new compressor , allow £4-500 quid

check every switch and button

with engine running , remove oil filler cap, put ur hand over the hole and ensure u feel a vacuum , make sure there's no white/ water on inside if cap

check terrain response system works ok in each setting

driving along on tickover , gently tap the brakes , ensure there's no knocks

check spare wheel is there

look for any leaks underneath

check seats trim etc, if electric that they work

rear parking sensors work

if fitted check info screen

higher the model u go, more expensive the ins is

if an auto, get in a hill, leave in drive, take ur foot off the brake, it should not roll back, regardless of gradient

make sure all doors line up

sunroofs leak if the drain pipe arnt cleaner out regular

if u buy one , get an iid diagnostic reader, allow £400 , will pay for its self very quickly

The oil punp should be replaced with the belts. if not the old one is known to fail soon after. there is a difference in the new one, the webbing in the casting has been strengthened.

Agree, the 2 reviews aint good but generally only people with a bad experience leave them, and youve only one side of the story.
Im sure if it happened as stated in the reviews, Trading Standards would be involved,
By the way, Ive have no connection or ever used them, so cant give a personal recommendation one way or the other

heard more report of either the casing or seal failing

when they started to take mine apart my old casing had been leaking , can see it leaking in the first pic

on the cam belt change i got done , as per pics

front and rear belts
tensioners
water pump
crankshaft bolt
aux belt
upgraded oil pump

the citroen oil pump casing is the same as the land rover one, however i went for the genuine one ,

all the other parts are all genuine , wouldn't risk fitting any pattern parts to the engine , not worth it

also the oil pump is the upgraded one, has a stronger casing and also provides faster oil pressure on start up

i had an annoying tinkering noise on start up and that's now gone

tickover is smoother as well, has transformed the engine and goes like stink

Always good to get stuff like that done mate, sense of satisfaction having everything as it should be. Likewise with mine - most of it's done now, just got the rad to replace (I think it's that anyway)
