Morning All

So had the Freelander a month now and all has been ok'ish

Now several times in that month it's been a pig to start, taking several wangs of the starter to get going ( batterys good and when it starts normally the engine only take half a turn ish before firing) when it finally does fire there's a cloud of unburnt fuel smoke comes out the back and it will run fine the rest of the day, other days it starts fine and runs like a swiss watch.

Now over the weekend it started fine on saturday and drove to in laws where it sat for about 3 hours, come out to go home and it's a pig to start again, drive less than 100 yards and stop at the farm to drop some bits off and it's a pig to start again afterwards even though it's been running.

This morning on the way to work driving in slow traffic at about 25 ish in 4th on a constant throttle and it gives a couple of misfires, the engine management light flashes on and off once then it runs fine again,

Few miles down the road and I get similar symptoms at a roundabout but whilst stationary but this time it cuts out completely, re starts fine and about 2 miles down the road in slow traffic it does it again but doesn't cut out

After that no issues at all to work, from the looks of the service history it's had a rear fuel pump recently so dont think its that.

I've done a search but as there's various similar issues crop up I cant pin it down to anything specific

Anyone had similar issues?

I've had similar issues, and it was the rear fuel pump. Just check whether your replacement is aftermarket, as they are often ****e, and that the fuel filter was changed at the same time for a decent one.

Other than that, leakback test? HP pump regulator O-ring split?

Thanks mate will have a look at the pump, its due a service anyway so will have a look at the filter

wheres the regulator situated? can any leaks been seen externally? or is it a case or removal to see it?

Could be all sorts, but looks more like an injector loom problem to me.

Here's the HP pump, as you would see it looking into the engine bay. The reg is on the right - remove connector and two Torx screws to get it out. You'll see the O-ring on it - I don't think they leak externally.

Could be all sorts, but looks more like an injector loom problem to me.

Too right. I think we need a Td4 general guide to poor performance - a step-by-step guide to stop repetition. Including such gems as: LP pump, filter, HP pump/reg, injectors/loom, leakback test, boost solenoid........

Just out of interest

The mrs managed to spill some tea whilst we were sat at chatsworth fair yesterday and it went down the top of the dash above the air bag cover, from what I can see it all ran though and ended up on the floor mat, is there anything important electronic wise other than the air bag over that side that the tea could be causing issues with? as the light only came on this morning after the incident

No, you just unplug the original and plug in an upgraded replacement.

The original is known to fail and give random starting and running issues. The replacement is upgraded in places to overcome these problems - so don't replace with a 2nd hand one from a breakers! Its not a big loom and doesn't cost a lot (but isn't cheap).

Got any links GG? famous 4 only seem to do the pressure regulator loom?

Yes. Might be easier to remove the starter to get at it.

It might be worth getting another opinion on the loom/harness.

I'm not sure if its the STC4552 Injector wiring loom or the YMQ503320 fuel pressure regulator loom that gives the TD4 erratic behavior.

I just searched for both and only this thread shows STC4552 - but there's lots of hits for YMQ503320.

the stc4552 is the injector wiring loom

but it's the fuel pressure regulator repair loom ymq503320 is the one that is normally replaced

I got thrown by that at first , lol

Update

Gave the connector a wiggle yesterday morning and a good spray of GT90 PTFE spray and all seems to be well

More than likely I'll have to replace the pressure regulator loom at some point but for now she's behaving herself and starting better, no unburnt fuel and not rumbly idle either

Would a normal code reader read it or would i need one of these hawkey things I hear people on here talking about?

No a normal one probably won't pick it up.
An icarsoft 930 or LR2 and as you say a Hawkeye will.

I have an icarsoft LR2, which isn't bad. Not as good as a Hawkeye, but you are welcome to use it.

I shall be sunning myself 13-25th of this month, but other than that im usually knocking about.
