Hi,
Well this is an old problem of my KV6. been like this for the last 1 year. the auto trans is slipping when changing from 3rd to 4rd gear and it only happens when its hot.
Anyone has a clue? it looks like got something to do with the oil actually.

is it worse in sports/manual mode?

do yu do towing?

hmmm...not quite sure actually but i think its the same. btw never tow anything...not sure with the previous owner...but yes there is a small leak

The odd thing is it only happen when it is hot and only from 3rd to 4th...there rest are fine

I had a similar prob on mine - but it was more noticeable in manual (maybe i drove it harder). I was told its an overhaul jobby - but with an intercooler to keep the oil running cooler it was about £1800.

not good news - but then they could have been bull****ting me.

Didnt your have an trans oil cooler already? or you add another oil cooler?

I think all the Jatco boxes have an oil cooler - but I am lead to believe it is not really man enough if yu do a lot of towing - hence I was advised to get an uprated one fitted whilst the box was being overhauled - as it was I sold it with a slipping 3rd-4th

I thought - wot with the heating/overheating probs with the petrol hippoos - an uprated cooler wouldnt go amiss anyway.

I would say the culprit is the BLOODY THERMOSTAT !!

as far as the water system goes - yes - but the cooler yu can keep the bits (gearbox/ird/block) the less heat there is to transfer to the water.

I agree with dearot. ALL freelander faults can be traced back to the thermostat. might not even be your own thermostat, could have been the cars that you parked next to 3 years ago. it's always a stat problem.

this is the box which needs to be attached to the diagnostics and only filled when at temperature!

yup that is correct but yer can guestermate tempriture/un the diagnostics is all bollix. . . . . .

yu reckon just do it when it is up to temperature?

Dont furget the overflow plug is easily mistaken - and if yu undo the wrong one - yu can fook the complete box. It is covered here...

yep i did it un it wez strait forward. . . .yes floppy is reet make sure you undo the correct plugs, its easy fer earthlings to make er mistake. . . .but fer er rockit scientist like me its a very basic job. . . . .
