Mixing re-treads and new tyres is not a good idea - especially on the same axle.
 
In fact, mixing old and new tyres on the same axle is also not a good idea. As new tyres has a larger circumfrence (whatever the damn spelling is) and old tyres has smaller circumfrance, the speed they travel are slightly different. After long periods of travel, your diff will be fecked.

Mixing different brand/tread patterns are also bad as different tread pattern has slightly grip characteristics, and this slightest characteristics difference will be amplified in the rain when its slippery
 
Didn't relise that but makes sense when you think about it. I only have two tyres the same make and they are on the diagnal! Says alot about the garage that I brought the landy from!
 
ah well....also to note is that different makes of tyres has different tyre circumfrance too even though they both says 235/73/16 per say.....BF goodridge normally has slightly bigger circumfrance......

different brand has slightly different tread depth too...so, if in the wet, one side disperse water faster than the other.......go imagine if you are travelling at 70mph....

There are good reason why tyre manufacturers recommend fitting same make of tyres all round and rotating them every 1000 miles or so, so that they wear out evenly, that includes the spare too. You may already knew that front tyres wear out faster than the rear under normal load.....

All in all, same tyres all round of the same age is always better. If you really have to mix new tyres and old ones, always do them, in pairs, with the new ones up front (to wear them out that slightly faster till they are about the same as the rear ones).
 
If you've got directional tread patterns on yer car, only roatate them front to rear keeping them on the same side of the vehicle - swapping them across the axle or diagonally would cause the tread to run 'backwards'. That's ok as a short term measure to get you home, but is dangerous in the wet as the tread floods with water and you'll aquaplane much more easily.
 
hate to throw a spanner in the works ,, nah thats a lie, but if a tyre on one side is slighty more worn than the other side resulting in the different circumference it int gonna knacker yer diff.
diffs are designed to have a differing speed output on both sides hence the name differential...if that was gonna knacker yer diffs am gonna move to swindon and open up a diff replacment service
 
go for a happy medium and stick it in Newbury. that way, when people go and get their chassis waxoiled for £1500 they can go and see you after and spend loads more... genius ;)

Ok, you have all said enough for me to decide to sort out the tyres. What make of tyres would you lot recomend? (90% road work, 10% of driving on tracks and fields.) Starting with the cheepest first please!
