Hi Landy Lovers.... I think.....well I know I have a coolant leak at the rear of my engine on my 2002 4.4 v8... I have been under and had a look. it looks like its coming from a 'boomerang ' shape metal that goes across the engine.. I found the gasket on ebay...my question is dose the gear box have to come off to repaire this???? I got spooked from a vid I see on youtube. (admitinly that m62 was in a bmw car).. your thoughts would be greatly appreciated ..... stuart.. by the by this is my third range rover with a bmw power.. and the engines have all given my grief !!!!:confused:.... sorry one more thing.. the top radiator hose gets rock hard when hot.. is this normal dose any one know?
 
Not au fait with the 4.4 but if you have a coolant leak in the interconnector, it could cause an air pocket in the heads that would give you the hard hose. Get it sorted or you may have big problems.

I wouldn't panic too much. Chances are it is the hose that goes across the back of the engine that's dripping onto the cast water rail. It a little awkward to get to but still a DIY job.
 
Hi.. Thanks for your thoughts.. its a nightmare to see where its coming from.. I removed the 'tray' that holds the cabin filter to gain better view.. but its real hard to get ya head in.. from underneath its no better.... think its wipers off then the surrounding tray thing to get a better look... thanks to you all.. stuart..(in cloudy cornwall)...
 
Hello .. Ha ha... just got one!!.. thanks very much for the tip... being related to a dental nurse I got two or three of the mirrors the dentist use.. but this is hard core..!!.. many thanks .......now where's my bmw effigy so I can stab pins into it...
 
remove cabin filter tray as previous, unclip gas struts on bonnet & lock tabs into upright position so the bonnet is vertical, put your foot on the bumper & climb ontop of engine all will become clear gangs of room ,;)
 
Hi Landy lovers... its been a while on this one but what with having a new baby .and having the use of me mrs pathfinder (don't hit me..!)..ect I finally got around to my leak.. any way turns out it was the coolnt manifold gasket at the rear of the engine.. all sorted now .. thanks to a good mechanic I know who only touches landrover products.. many thanks for your advice guys.. id be lost without this website... Stuart... next on the list is the rear pdc....

Hi Stuart,

Glad you got it sorted. Have you any pictures or the like, for where the coolant manifold gasket is located?

And do you reckon thus could be a DIY job for us fellow L322 owners?
 
Hello Friend... unfortunately I have no pics to show because I entrusted the job to my good friend of mine who owns Lanro engineering down here in Cornwall.. but he did say that with the movement of the pollen filter box and the bonnet in service mode that it was a job I could do (DIY job).. I had a few other pipes at the back replaced as well.. it is all well documented on the rave cd...thanks Stuart
 
As Stuart says, it is a DIY'able job....fiddly but doable as long as you don't mind lying on top of the engine all day!

A PITA but doable to a competent spanner wrangler!

It is absolutely a DIY job. The more you get to know the car the better you feel about it. Once the pollen filter hunk of plastic is removed access is okay.

You will have to lie on to op the pretty plastic engine cover and look an idiot (I have to work in a busy road and I do feel a bit of a prat) but it is not too bad. Once a diagnosis is found it is essentially lego all-be-it dirty and hard on the fingers. Note if a hose is stuck on you can warm it with a hair dryer.

It is an excellent post and if you do get dirty in that area of the engine bay do check the PCV piping - mine was all shot to bits.

On way home from office this afternoon and I got the dreaded "Check Coolant Level" warning. Scared the crap out of me as this was the same warning I got last week before hose at the rear of the car split and deposited coolant all over the road!
Luckily I was near home so managed to get it onto the drive and switch the engine off.
Opened the bonnet and:

1) No obvious signs of coolant leaks or split hoses.
2) Top rad hose is hot and firm.
3) Bottom rad hose is the same.
4) No drips from under the car to indicate any problems.

So restart the engine and the fault code has gone....

What gives???

non or wrong mixture of antifreeze/summer coolant can trigger this message
 
Update on the situation so far...

Let the engine cool down. Opened the expansion tank cap and have topped up about 1 and half litre of coolant.
So my question is, where has the coolant gone?
No obvious signs of leakage anywhere.

+1, had this issue with mine... It did it after I bought it on the drive back from the Lake District to Bedfordshire, how do you think I felt !! :eek:
