Hi All,
As a 71 year old who cannot afford to have a garage change the Oil and Filters and who cannot under any circumstances scramble under a car in this weather can anyone give me the following info.
I intend using a suction pump to remove the old oil from my 2001 TD4S Auto, so where is the best place to suck it from? Is it through the dipstick area, the Oil Filter housing once the filter is removed or from the oil filler area on top of the engine? I realise that I will not get rid of all the old oil, but that"s the only alternative I have.
All constructive advice gladly accepted.
Cheers

Last time I had a garage change the oil (in NOT a Freelander), they sucked it all out through the dipstick tube !

that's what I do, saves taking the sump tray oft ;)

you'll need a very thin long tube for this though, angle the car to make sure you get as much as you can out.

Yes suction the oil from the dipstick tube this will remove most of the oil ! ( even when you drain from sump you still have some left in engine )

If you have to buy a suction pump / oil / oil filter I have another option ?

National tyres would change it for you , Aprox £70 Including removing undertray changing oil filter & using castrol edge 5w-30 fully synthetic ( Just the oil would cost you £70 in halfords )

Hi Freelaner,
I"ve got the pump and filters, just got to get the oil from Halfords and then!!!! wait until it gets a bit warmer before I start. I"ll let you know how I get on,
Cheers

Hi Dave.

An oil change on a TD4 takes 6.8 litres.

Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 is a good choice.

Any equivalent 5W-30 will do - as long as it says C3 and LL01 in the spec on the container.

To change the filter you need to cover up the alternator with an old rag as it is right under the oil filter housing and gets oiled up if you're not careful.

Getting the filter element out and up is a bit of a wriggle so have a plastic bag to slip over it right away as if you've never done it before you'll have to take a minute or so to figure out how to turn it around to get it past the hoses that are in the way.
