took wife to Gym reversing in full lock go to put car in first but the car still went backwards wouldnt move... gearlever said 1st... almight bang and im leaking fluid oil everywhere since i have managed to get the car home and i have to now clean my street before i can take a look so thought id post here and see what people thought

im thinking from a little look its gearbox/ird as the oil smells odd ( not engine oil smell lol)

Jacked car up had a look i have a hole in the IRD also noticed the prop bearings had about 3mm of movement only had the car since january and money aint good at the moment so i see it going

Sorry to hear that mate. Did you buy it from a dealer, was there any warranty with it ???. Might be able to find a good IRD at a breakers somewhere, there's a couple of member on here who break freelanders.

i have being outside again cnt stay out tolong its freezing and i suffer from the cold....

i have jacked up the wheel on the drivers side for a better view when i try to spin the wheel it doesnt spin

does that mean the IRD is ok (except for the hole) i thought if it was broken inside it would just let me spin the wheel

Seeing as you have a hole that would suggest something has come shooting out throught the side of the IRD casing.

well after speaking to the wife and just spending £230 on 4 new tyres i have a budget of £200 for a 2nd hand one if i cnt find a replacement i will have to source some wheels for it then scrap it

There's a few on ebay at the moment. But what you need to think about as well is it sounds like your going to need a new VCU and bearings at the same time and these don't come cheap.

Hopefully somebody else will come along and give you more/better advice on this as I'm limited in experence on this.

Chin up, at least that's pretty much the worst thing that could go wrong with a Doozle . Or indeed any freelander, they are by far the most expensive bits.

just come at the wrong time it really has the fact it has a hole in it is what makes me mad because the car itself drives normal hence me driving the car home and now i cnt move it just coz of a hole the size of a 5p piece

With money tight, get an ird on it and run it mondo - hardly anyone agrees with me on this, but it is a perfectly usable front wheel drive car.

Will you get a recon IRD? You could get a good one from a breaker you can generally tell the really fecked ones. But I doubt you;ll get part ex if yours has a hole in it .

i have found someone on here selling one and a friend of mine has found one local to me in a scrap yard but i would go and see it first it all depends on cost it has to be repaired asap and as cheap as just to get me bk on the road hence going 2wheel drive until i get another couple of wage packets in

Sounds like a fair plan . Drove mine in mondo for almost a year, just don't expect it to give you the traction you get in 4x4 and you should be fine. Just watch out for wet roundabouts !
