I thought I'd post up about my Series 3 rebuild I've just started.

It began after Christmas when I bought this old fella from a local owner. It hadn't moved in 15 years, and was looking a bit unloved.

This is where I found him

Here is his back home, looking a bit sorry for himself.

The strip down began over Christmas

The chassis probably could be saved, but as I'm building it to keep forever I'm having a new galvanized one instead.

First reconstruction work has been on the axles. I started with the rear, stripping it down fully then rebuilding with new seals, bearing and brake parts

I started the front axle last weekend. It's having a full rebuild too, which I'm hoping to finish over the next couple of days.

Here's the bulkhead ready to go on. I cheated with this and bought a ready repaired one.

Just stood for years. It got parked up when a half shaft broke and the bloke who had it started using one of the others he had instead.

what do you plan on doing with the chassis is it worth the mamoth welding task of repairing it or is it just being replaced with a galvanised chassis

I'm replacing it. My order's in for a galv replacement, hopefully collecting it in the next couple of weeks

i dont blame you mate the graft ive put into my chassis id think twice about doing it again

just remember with the old chassis find the bit with the chassis number still on it and cut that part out and keep it so if theres any question of its authenticity in the future you have the original proof from its original chassis

i just got insanely lucky finding mine still on the front hanger

I've already looked into it all, and mine's before the cut off date for needing a number on the chassis. The chassis number plate on it's own is enough

Bit more done today with the front axle

Old and new chrome balls

New one fitted along with new leather gaiter, which was a right pain to fit. You have to cover it in Vasoline which then ends up everywhere

And this is where I'm at.

I've got tomorrow off, so it'll be done in the morning and then I'll start the next job.

Your rebuild is looking good, I bet you can't wait for the new chassis to arrive.
I remember doing the leather gaiters on the first rebuild I did, what a PITA, never bothered with them since, I might be more inclined to go with the rubber ones I've seen advertised.

i was just wondering if those leather socks over the front axle swivvel balls are something that used to be on series landrovers or are they an invention of your own design as its a bloody smart idea

Leather gaiters were standard on military ones (I think)

military or not its a damn good idea but i cant find the kits on either paddocks or craddocks so ill just cut me own out of a pair of old leather welding sleeves

cant be that hard to do

I took them out to make sure no bits were missing from any teeth, but they looked fine, so just stuck them back in.

They do protect the swivels chrome from the damage that rough roads can do however there is a problem associated with wading, if you get dirty water in them they keep the crap inside and can act as a big grinder and ruin the chrome and seals.
I have seen, although never used them, some rubber gaiters a bit like giant CV joit boots that might get around the problem.
