I seem to be getting a lot of disimilar info when trying to find the right engine locking and pulley pulling tool for a 1996/7 discovery 1 on some sites they refer to a chain some even show pic of a belt, but call it a chain, others make a differance between 200 and 300 I have looked at one with the pins & crank pulley locking bar and a puller but has no camshaft pin,can some one put me right,

just use a 9.5mm drill bit. I believe you can use a 9mm if you don't have a 9.5mm though.

Hi Dev, I bought the Difflock.com kit. It has a puller for all the pulleys, various pins to lock the pump and flywheel on TDi 200 and 300.

Downside? £130 - but very good kit and makes the job a safe doddle. Perhaps you could do some for other peeps to get your money back?

it has done 2 cam belt changes - one on a 200 and the other on a 300. That aint much work, but all I have needed it for.

Well that's fair enough, isn't it?

When I bought mine - 6 to 8 yrs ago - the £140 jobby was the only one I could find, however it has done a lot of work, perhaps 30 cambelt changes, without any signs of wear at all.

That reminds me, I need to do the Cambelt on Wendys 110

I'm going to get one of those kits, better than 'kin about with bits of old drill and harmonic balancer pullers for normal cars. The vendor is only just down the road from me too.

Thanks for the info, not sure i'll be venturing as far as france - but thanks for the offer mate. Just been thinking that my disco has done 120,000 miles and i'm not sure when the belt was last done.

apart from the crankshaft pulley removal, it is not a difficult job, so if the history of the car is unknown I would advise to replace the belt and start from fresh, the price of the belt plus some hours you need to change it is much lower than a broken engine if the belt breaks !
same is true for parts like the thermostat or the P-gasket (that you should change while opening the timing cover), change them before you discover they were over age

Have got a new thermostat on its way but what is a "p gasket"??

its the gasket on water way behind water pump ,pas pump bracket it can be seen from behind alternator if leaking ,you wont need to touch it to do cam belt

Oh ok sounds like it should be done everytime the cambelt gets done then - for access?
Have got a Haynes manual so will have a read up on it.

totally seperate job from cam belt if its not leaking you may get more problems doing it for the sake of it
