Morning All,

1998 4.6 V8 auto.

I'm just checking my autobox fluid level. I'm not sure I put the right amount in when I changed the fluid and filter last time. (about 6 litres went back in).

The engine is cold, the engine running.

When I dip the stick I push it all the way home, and then lift it out to look at the level.

Problem is I'm not getting a clear reading at all? I have a kind of smear of red fluid extending way past full, but it's not a clear line across the dip stick. It looks a lot like it's picked up fluid from the walls of the fill tube, so it's hard to judge how full it is.

I've now been out there filling it my 250ml a time and checking I'm worried the engine isn't cold anymore so I'm getting the wrong reading!

Should I be seeing a clear cut line across the dip stick or what?

Thought with the dipstick it was Cold through the gears back to Neutral...then check...not Park??

Should say on the dipstick...IIRC

EDIT: or was that the Classic??

I've seen both neutral and park quoted. With all the autobox problems I've had, I've become an expert at refilling the bloody things:rolleyes::mad::mad::mad:

Thanks for the advice. Been and had a cuppa. Looking at it with fresh eyes, the line is easy to see.

I had got a bit too much in! I hope I haven't bust it, there are warnings all over the place about no overfilling....

It's at the right level now, but might be a bit warm, so I'll let it cool down and check again this evening.

I think I prefer the post MY99 refill procedure. Pretty impossible to over-fill it that way.

Thanks again...

FYI,

I checked and topped up this morning. (Engine and gearbox very very cold) and managed to get another 1250ml in!

So please remember to check this with the engine cold, you're a litre and a bit short if you don't!
