One of head lights beam works on and off. Say check dip on dash. Will work sometimes not others. Is there something that powers the xenon that not working properly? Am I looking at a new light or can u get components?

The igniter is inside the headlamp casing and is a bit fiddly to replace

but the control unit just bolts on the back of the casing

Any idea where/if you can by these? I'm thinking controller more than ignitor given it sometimes works sometimes not.

Check connections on plugs first for corrosion etc...

Will do.

Am I correct in assuming the ignitor fires the lamp and the ballast regulates the voltage once running?

My conclusion would be either dodgy connection or the ignitor isn't reaching a high enough voltage to fire it (sometimes)?

Or the light does flicker on but the ballast is knackered so it doesn't stay lit? I do seem to recall a flicker.

Thats sort of the idea.
Not sounding stupid but you have tried swapping over the lamps incase it's just a dodgy lamp ?

that will be first job, no dealt with HID before so good to understand how it works. Job for weekend will let you know how i get on.

Couple of jobs to do on freelander too....

can't beat the L322 on comfort but I still love the freebe.

Update.

Can get the HID to light but first need to turn to side lights for a second, then onto dip and it works every time.

More likely starter?

Does it ever flicker? Never done a range rover, but don't forget there's one on the other side!?!? Hate to point out the obvious but you can swop bits one at a time to see when the fault moves to the other side, then that's the fault! Could be the bulb too! But they tend to be ****in expensive so swop that too, see if fault moves! If nothing changes the fault then you need to be thinking control units:( and plugging into a computer! Don't forget the very high voltages they use always turn off before touching :)
Hope that's of help. W
