I bought my first freelander 6 months ago.
But since I got it I have had to put water in the cooling system. About 1 pint per month or 1 pint per 1000 miles.
It has done 64000 miles and there is no oil in water or water in the oil.
I cannot see any leaks anywhere and the seal on the header tank looks OK.
Any ideas?

No idea what can cause the loss of water but please think about it to add antifreeze as well as diluating the cooling water by adding plain water all the time could have you run in trouble when it starts freezing ??
Good luck.

well it only sounds like a small leak is the radiator ok no small visable leaks from any hoses, also antifreeze is thinner than water and will always find a way out is your carpet nice and dry under the heater box,no obvious pointers come to mind as you dont normally get head gasket probs on the xedi, sorry cant help more than this tiga.

I have only put water in it so far but with winter round the corner I think anti freeze will be a good idea.
I cannot see any sign of a leak anywhere. Glad to here head gaskets are not normally a problem. I was thinking it might be leaking into a cylinder and getting blown out the exhaust. This was one of the reasons I have been reluctant to add anti freeze.
Does anybody know of a way of testing for this?

hi you can get a kit called a block tester you put a tube type kit on top off the coolant tank fill to the level with special blue dye which comes in the kit and run engine if it turns yellow oh dear normally only takes a couple of mins,if there are small bubbles in glass tube it carries up any combustion gasses and turs the dye from blue to green/yellow sometimes halfords sell them or draper do them hope this helps tiga
