I have just picked up a Series 3 which has the wrong engine on V5, so my question is it is listed as a 3300 diesel ( perkins I guess at some point) but it actually has a Ford petrol 2.8 fitted should I tell the DVLA when I send the V5 off as I have all sections or will that open up a can of worms? I have no idea when or who fitted the replacement engine.

Any thoughts

Old engine will have been a Perkins 4/203. 2.8 V6 is a good engine in a series too.

I would tell them. It shouldn't be a problem so long as neither the vehicle or the engine is nicked.

My Ninety had been fitted with a reconditioned engine when I bought it. The original number was on the docs. I sent off the form with the new details, it all came back, no problem.

If you are involved in an accident, I think it might invalidate your insurance if you don't tell them you have a petrol engine.

Will I need to find the engine number for the new engine?

Yes you should tell them but I was advised by a post office manager to make only one change at a time when dealing with DVLA.

I wanted to change address, class and colour.

The class she did at the PO computer and advised I change the address and when I got it back to send it off again with the change of colour.

DVLA also like a cover note from a 'competent' mechanic for an engine swap. I've no idea if they'll ask or what they'll want but it needs doing anyway.

obviously dvla are a fickle bunch, but you would hope they would see the logic in the fuel type and taxation class being no different, so would just hopefully change the engine no. and cc for you (if you want to tell them)

Fuel type is different, but it still shouldn't be an issue.

Is it tax exempt if so they cannot ask you for letter from Competent Mechanic ruiles where relaxed awhile back for classic cars.
