Recent MOT on my defender was a just made it job on emission so I bought some injector cleaner and added it to the tank, it is now smoking like mad when cold seems to lack power and when I lift of the throttle it seems to want to run on.
When I stop I can hear the tank pump whining.
I am going to change the injector seals when the weather is a bit better and anneal them first. I also changed the fuel filter when I added the cleaner so I will check that out.

What engine oil are you using?

running injector cleaner through the system
this stuff is corrosive specially when left in the system for a period of time

if your going to run an injector cleaners make sure you plan a trip and use up all the fuel in the tank qiuck as possible
you may need to add in 2 stroke oil to your fuel as this will take up some slack (tolerances ) in the fuel injection system and injectors

Morning,

on a td5 fender, ratio of use would be considerably less than 100ml for a tank on a 1st dose.

Cheers
Yes, forgot that the fender has smaller tank than the D2:oops:... though 75ml is less than 100ml so my statement was not that wrong especially that i asked if the dosage was respected or not

Did you respect the dosage of that stuff so less than 100ml in a full tank?
Well must admit I doubled up the dose to try and kick start the process. The engine has been a bit smokey since I bought it and the tail pipe is quite sooty. I have tried redex in the past but that never seems to do anything.

then at the dosage rate of that product IMO that's causing the black smoke

Always and forever :)
Not sure what is doing it but it's an accelerating process I 're filled the tank with shell and so diluted the mix bit the smoke was worse than ever when I drove it on Thursday morning, in sub zero temperatures i could see clouds of smoke behind me for the first ten minutes.
Strange sensation when I lift my foot and it seems to run on, wondering if the copper washers on the injectors have blown an fuel leaks in on the induction stroke

Failed copper washers would let air be drawn in
I would take intercooler pipe off and see if it still smokes, eliminate turbo problem if nothing else

The washers are in the header channel where the diesel is delivered to the injector at 4 bar (hopefully) obviously in the compression stroke the cylinder pressure is much higher and air would pass from the cylinder into the diesel this gets returned to the filter and I think this is why the pump whines, purging the system stops the whining.
But on the induction stroke you have pressurised diesel and the cylinder is very slightly below atmosphere.

I bow to your superior knowledge sir :)

Is the smoke black? If so would indicate an inbalance of fuel/air

In the colder weather mine has been a bit smokey on start up recently once its properly warm its fine.

Its worth checking!
