Hi guys, my first post after buying a '92 military defender. Hope someone can help me with this.

I've bought a mud console and am in the process of fitting it. The previous owner had a cigarette lighter socket fitted and I want to remove this and change it to a simple 12V socket. The original has two purple (!) wires which meet and go in to the back, and there's an earth. The new socket has simple positive and negative terminals for spades to attach onto. The question is, how to I change it over? Any help would be appreciated.

cheers shifty. the two prongs on the new fitting are just + and - though? surely the earth doesnt go to the - etc?

is the other purple wire to power the light inside the old socket? the mudstuff ones dont have a light and are therefore only a +/- affair. It is simple. honest.

not sure, but it wasnt lit when the lights were on before.

there must be a + and - though, no? and what about the earth wire? does that need to go somewhere?

My point was just that if he doesnt even know if the earth wire has to be connected, then maybe he should not be attempting it.....

Your point was obvious, hence my ignoring it. Everyone has to start somewhere (hence my asking the question in the first place), and simply because you have more knowledge in this area than me doesn't really warrant stupid sarcasm.

*snigger :D

you do have to be carefull though. I like to think i know what im doing now putting new things in etc. but I still brick myself everytime making sure "I got it right". Not much room for error really, you could lose your pride and joy in a small fireball.

Just double check everything and insulate well.

My aproach may not be to your liking, but i have seen too many vehicle fires started by peeps that thought they new what they are doing. Sometimes yu need to know your limitations and get somone who does know what they are doing do the job. A family in norfolk minus kids springs to mind.

Oh and that reminds me- anyone here able to guide me through a simple brain surgery operation?;)
