Last night was the first night I driven my recently purchased 1986 defender 'Bitsa' home in the dark and the rain. It was a memorable journey in a buttock clenching way. I had just collected it after a cheap respray job, unfortunately they had got the workshop chimp too refit all lights and fittings, half the lights didn't work. After an hour all lights apart from the rear reversing light were working, the reversing light was working before it went in but they assured me it wasn't working! It wasn't long after setting off it was realised all was not well with headlight aim. But was more alarming the the wipers fell off will driving at 50 down a country lane in heavy rain, pitch black. I managed to stop safely and when I had calmed down I drove very slowly the rest of the way (wipers arms long gone). The wiper function has been poor, will not park, only 1 speed slow (but last night went to second speed all on its own), no sweep function. Now wipers and lights are on the top of the to do list. Checked this morning block going back to relay and motor has 6 wires the switch only has later switch with 5 wires and only 3 are connected, wash wipe works, does anyone know to make the two work or does anyone have an early defender wiper wiring diagram colour codes etc.? Have ordered new arms, wiper motor and later switch today.

Sounds similar to my wiper problem that ended with smoke coming out of the left side of the dash, my wipers were always pathetic, new wiper motor and they almost feel modern - install was easy but you have to make sure the motor is set to start with a push, not pull, simple mod to fix.
