wiper issues

During the bulkhead replacement, I renewed the part shown below in yellow. Tested and all worked fine (i.e. turning etc). The part in red didn't come, so I took it off the original.

I just put my wipers on today and the friction of the wiper on the screen seems to be too much. I can hear the motor turning and something happening on the inside of the bulkhead, but the spindle (outside) and wiper don't turn.

Any thoughts? Would the cable be spinning in the new housing? Is there a way to tighten it up? I guess I could try a new cable, but it looked ok when I renewed it.

The “cable” doesn’t spin, it pushes and pulls as the motor drive rotates.

It sounds as though the wiper driver “cable” is slipping on the sprockets inside the wheelboxes (yellow circles parts).

Remove the top dash panel, and have a look at the wiper boxes as you activate the wipers. If the “cable” is pushing and pulling, and the wipers aren’t moving, you can close the wiperbox up slightly to make the “cable” engage the sprocket more. Be careful not to close them up too much:

It'll either be as mick says, the cable not connecting onto the large cog, or....

if you bought a cheaper whiper wheel box part (not judging, I have before) then the arm that sticks out through the bulkhead might have lost connection to the larger cog that turns it. I had some craps ones (blue box) and the long arm had some very shallow teeth that was hammered into the hole in the cog. it slipped early on. To fix it I had a guy splash a tiny weld onto it (while it was all still in the car) but this was Mongolia and i couldn't find a replacement.

I had this happen to BOTH boxes after a while. Replace with better quality. Now other parts of the system brake, but not the boxes.

Ok, so took the top of the dash off. Without the wiper blades touching everything moves and works ok. When the wipers touch the window, the cable starts skipping over the top of the big cog.

I tried to tighten the two nuts, but they are already dam tight.

So would this suggest the cable is goosed, or the bracket spindles? Or is there no way of knowing until I try one?

having also had this issue (only a week ago) i took no chances and changed both

Worn teeth on the spindel cog likely,remove wiper arm and then undo the two nuts and retainer plate.Then pull the cog back and turn 180 to an area of unused teeth.

It looks like the teeth on the cog are worn.

Have you tried backing the nyloc nuts off a little to see if you can get the cogs to align better?

The cogs are brand new! But not out of the question....

Just watched this. 5.40 into the video could be my answer as the exact same thing is happening.

Don't bend them tabs too much
Yep only do the middle tab as the pipes/tubes go into the others. Also I adjusted the tab on the rear which presses on the cog to stop the float.

That looks like your answer. What brand did you get? I did mine a few weeks back and they were made by LAP and had that stamped on them, worked perfectly. Good for others to know which work well and which don’t.

It was the cheap one off Paddocks. I put it on about a year ago, so not too sure of brand i’m afraid.

I’ll try and fix tonight and report back...

When I did my wipers I had the exact same problem. Mine were Britpart wiper boxes. I subsequently bought Bearmach ones and they worked perfectly. I tried to bodge the Britpart ones to work as the guy in the video did but had no success with them.
