Hi all, planning to change the gearbox oil on my 300tdi disco, the haynes manual recommends using Dextron llD (ATF) but, the man at my local LR garage says not to use that in a r380 box but to use MTF94 instead.:confused:

Can anyone offer some advice please.

MTF94 is the right answer. Land Rover's original advice at the time of manufacturing the Disco was to use ATF in the manual box; but they updated it, presumably after some weaknesses with the gearbox revealed themselves over time.

Its a particular spec of oil for Land Rovers, I struggled to find a FLAPS who sold it, if you're struggling then there's always the local LR dealer.

I was interested in the post so I called my LR dealer to get some mtf94 and they did not know what I was talking about.

I have a '96 disco with a manual gearbox with ATF in it and I have pressure and grinding if I shift too fast. I was thinking this mtf94 might help.

Is this just a 94 weight gear oil?

Thanks

Hi mezorba, just had a look on the MTF 94 can and it says its made in uk, lode lane for landrover.
There is a number on the front, i think its part no, the number is stc 9157. Try giving your lr dealer this number.

1. Can be bought in 1ltr or 5ltr cans from LR dealer, 5 ltrs works out at half the price of buying in 1ltr cans;

2. It is actually made by Texaco;

3. ATF does not have the friction modifiers to allow the synchros in a manual box to work correctly - MTF (manual transmission fluid) 94 does.
