After changing my viscous fan yesterday, I started the car this morning and as I accelerate, a loud "whoosh" sound was coming from the engine bay. I thought it could be a vaccum leak of some kind, but it disappears after less than a minute and didn´t return all day.

Never heard this noise previously, but then again the old viscous fan was DOA.

It sounds as if the car is sucking in 10 times the amount of air it usually does. Like a jet engine, but without the high pitch sound.

Any suggestions?...

They all do that if functioning correctly and again when locked-up. Why no Google viscous cooling fans for all the info u need on how they ooperate.
Thanks @discool
I´m familiar with the principle of operation of viscous fans, but had no idea they were so noisy, tbh. Mine wasn´t working when I bought it, so never had to deal with this sound before. Good to know it´s working properly though.

Do you keep it off during the winter months only?
Well the bearing is going in mine so i took it off after researching if its ok to do so. Its been off since november with no problems. I'm not sure about running with no fan in the height of summer though, i might get a new one before then.

I know some guys leave it off for the whole year and claim there´s no ill effects in doing so. From what they say, temps never go above safe levels, with or without VF.
