White Smoke

Hi All,

I've got quite a bit of white smoke (I think steam) from xaust even when warmed for 10 mins.

I'm thinking Head gasket?

If so anyone who's walked the walk recommend best ways of checking if its shagged?

Feel top hose, if its rock hard, head gasket.
Remove water filler cap, place hand on hole, if loads of pressure so that you cant seal it, head gasket.
Piece of glass close to exhaust, if the condensate doesnt have much smell and seems like water, head gasket.
Check dippo for mayo.
If engine overheats after idling for a few minutes, suspect gasket.
Another cause of white smoke is unburnt fuel (the condensate on the glass will smell strongly of diesel), this could be duffo pump or injectors, but its unlikely to happen at idle, normally under power or esp while starting.
If the engine is producing enough steam to be visible while driving then the water level will drop fairly quickly.
