A friend from Holland is looking at buying a diesel Range Rover, he's seen a 2002 P38 for 10K Euro's (they are over priced here) or a 2003 L322 for 15K Euro's thats supposedly had about 5K Euro's spent on it including a new gearbox in the last 12 months.

I know nowt about the L322. Personally I would go for the P38 judging by what I have read about early L322's

Any thoughts?:)

Depends on the condition of each vehicle. If that 5k the L322 has had spent on it includes a new autobox as you say then I'd definately choose that. In fact I'd choose the L322 eitherway as they are much improved in terms of interiors etc. L322's don't have THAT many problems with them compared to P38s from what I have seen on here, and given the main and most expensive problem (ie. the 'box) has been fixed, there shouldn't be too much else to worry about in theory. What is the milage like on each car?

A P38 would have to be in awesome condition to be worth 10K (even if that is Euros!)

Are these LHD? If not then why not come over here, buy one and drive back to Holland, its not that far and it sounds like he could save a fair bit of cash that way.

Yep LHD, I paid £4850 for my late 2000 RHD DHSE in the UK with 92K miles, a similar car in France with starship kilometrage was withdrawn from Ebay at 9K Euros as reseve not met!
The L322 in question has I think 265000 kilometres on it, the P38 a bit less.

Holy Moley! E15K (which is about £14k at today ex-rate) for 265k on the clock?! Insane! Anyone know how much it costs to convert from RHD to LHD? Someone could make a fortune in europe if it was cheap to convert!

I think the question we SHOULD be askin here is .....What is the purchaser goin to be using it for??? Commuting? Long trips? short Stop/start (City) drivin ?? ect ect

Commuting/Short Trips/city drivin I'd go fer the P38... long hauls/Motorway/autobhaan ect L322

I hear that a lot but you've really got to put it into perspective.

The oldest L322 are 8 years old, the oldest P38's double that. When I joined this forum a few years back posts on L322's were few and far between and generally confined to the satnav/ICE.

Now posts on the L322 make up a solid 35% of the forum with mechanical problems really starting to come to the fore as L322 pass down to the DIY owners. For all the P38 faults, it is still quite a reasonable car to work on. What you are going to find is that the L322 is going to be much more xpensive to keep going once the miles/years rack up and a lot of the electronics may be beyond the home mechanic (the P38 is just about at the edge of that capability)

P38 everytime, apart from the becm (and guys on here can get you round that) and a few strange lecky goin on's, they are relatively old fashioned and easy to work on. Unless an L322 is newish and not huge miles I wouldn't go there. Way beyond most diyers and my local indy cringes every time an early one turns up for more than a routine service, says it can take hours to diagnose isues, even with all the gear. He rates the newer ones when Jag got involved, but the early BMW ones he slates big time and as per the title, he's the expert not me!!
