Which pressure tester?

Just wondering what pressure tester to use on a Freelander cooling system, to check for leaks? What will it show you, and how?

I see a lot of mention of them on here, but have never seen one or an explanation of how to use it. I've got a v6, so this info may come in handy one day.

Just wondering :)

save yourself money and make one using cap and tyre valve

That looks good.

So just having looked at my new expansion tank cap is says 110kPa, which from the web is about 16psi, if I put in say 10psi and leave it for an hour and the pressure doesn't drop, then it's ok? Should the test be done when it's the engines hot, cold, or both?

if it has mls gasket on a petrol, look for staining on block

He's not leaking as such. Looses the difference between max and min on the header tank in 2000 miles. Will top him up and watch to see what happens. Thats half a years motoring to me. Was just thinking of the future as he's a v6. With the chance of liners slipping etc. More a case of wanting to know now what and how to check, so it's easy to do later on. He's a 2001, but his engine was new in 2003 after only 500 miles. Imported by faily and they paid for the newun.

He's well looked after. Recon auto at 8k miles. Belts at 19.5k miles. Got new coolant to go in him as well. Also MHM's level switch idea. First attempt snapped, so a bolt and 2 tap washers is keeping the system sealed for now.

try a new cap-simple and often overlooked coolant loss

Thanks. Got a new cap to go with the new header tank as they changed the size or somin.

Added. It does hiss when I remove the current cap. I assume this is a good thing, when it's closed when cold, then it's warmed up, and opened again after it cools with a hiss?

It works by relieving excess pressure if hot and stopping a vacuum when cooled.
