Hi,
I have a Freelander TD4 '01 and last week it broke down and the AA Diagnosed a faulty fuel pump. It was recovered to a Landrover main dealer who billed me for replacing the fuel pump (P/N WFX500070) and a MAF sensor (P/N MHK101130L) this was diagnosed as a seperate fault after a test drive.

If someone can help my questions are:

Where is the Air flow sensor located?

Is the Part number above for the fuel pump under the bonnet or in the tank. The reason I ask is that I have been led to believe that it was the one under the bonnet that was replaced however if I'm looking at the right part its definately not new!
The pump I'm looking at is on the N/S turret under the relay box.

Cheers

Dont know the full story here , but sounds like as usual you've had your pants pulled down, don't know the full tech of this one but maybe someone can correct me on this . On the td4 so far there was 2x systems of pump [1] one pump [under wheel arch] [ 2 ] 2x pump one under rear of motor with a fuel sender unit, two a lifter pump under r/h wheel arch. . .in this case its more likely that the one in the rear that will pack up. . .but not a guarantee. . . but as for the maf sensor as well . . . well I'm a real sinick , but i very much doubt it. . . more likely one of the pumps went u/s. . .sorry bout my neg thoughts. . . .Ming

Thanks Ming,

There was a pre existing fault before the fuel pump failed which was caused by the faulty MAF sensor - When pulling away or accelerating from low revs there was a significant lag (2 seconds or so), this has been cured by replacing the sensor I just wanted to know where it was so I could check!

At the moment I have no reason to doubt that the fuel pump wasn't replaced because i might be looking at the wrong thing. All I know is that what I think is a fuel pump under the bonnet isn't new! And the part number I've been billed for is not the in-tank pump (think thats WFX000200)

Can anyone tell me exactly where the two fuel pumps are located and can I see if either has been replaced without removing too much

Its an early TD4

Cheers
Dusty

Dusty. . . the one in the rear sits on top of the fuel tank, and the fuel level sensor and pump are sort of together, you will have to remove rear carpet /mats to locate it,the other [lift pump] if looking at engine it is on the rh/side under the wheel arch and is in a silly plastic cowel and in that you have a fuel filter ,a fuel pre heater, and a pump, unless of course they did another system on the 2001. . . Ming

Pictures attached are of the two fuel pumps ( I think!) the one in the front is definately not new as you can see by the dirt! The one in the tank I'm not sure about, is it easy to remove it from the tank?

Dusty. . .very hard to tell, the one on the front could well have been changed as it is in that silly plastic cowel, and could still have the dirt from the cowel,as for the rear one ,don't go there unless you have to ,best to ask whoever changed it,most decent garages let you see the old part if you ask ,and their is a lot of good garages. . .Ming

oh and the MAF [MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR] think i'm correct is in the air filter compartment[dont go there unless you have to]

The MAF is just outside the air filter compartment, when removing the 'sound' cover of the engine you can see the location in the back (together with the special Torx screws, 2 of them), these Bosch MAF cost about 265€ plus VAT (where the Pierburg is only 75€, but don't know for sure whether it will fit the Freelander, however funny detail, Pierburg has only one serial nbr for their MAF and that apparently fits BMW, VW, Mercedes, Seat etc... and as we have a BMW M47 engine ?? I know that VW owners (which normally also have Bosch) very often go to a Mercedes garage and ask for a Pierburg which is fitted in the CDI's to put them in their VW's, but up till now I haven't seen aby Freelander being fitted with it, so ...).

Dusty my freelander td4 had the same problem with the pump, mines is a 53 model and there is a low presure pump located under the rear n/s wheel arch and the main fuel pump on the o/side bottom of the engine, and the sender unit located in the tank that you have the thumpnail for, you could tell by the price which one they changed as the one in the tank would cost £344 +VAT ( mines was anyway ) but the main one unless mines is different is much more expensive as the labour would take 5 hours as i was quoted because the engine mounts has to be dropped and its not very easy to get too.

is that the part number on top of the in tank fuel pump? I am trying to see which part number my FL has because for V6 the dealer told me there are two type.

Other thing, is it easy to remove from the tank??

Cheers

Must be the time of year for 01 TD4 fuel pumps to go. Cost £584 to have them changed a couple of weeks back :(

looks to me like none of them have been replaced. if the one in the take was new, the white part on the top would be clean and new as the pump comes complete with the sender and the top bit.

The only other air flow meter from land rover that will fit the td4 is a sensor from a disco2 V8, the housing is different but the sensor is the same and can be unscrewed.

To see the air flow meter you'll need to take off the air filter cover to get a good look at it, you'll soon see if its been replaced. It's on the left hand side of the engine, at the back by the brake master cylinder/servo.

I think you're right (not just 01 but all), we've done loads of pumps over the past weeks, I think it might be the cold weather, the deisel goes a bit thicker in the cold and this puts extra load on the pump.

Surely all deisel cars dont go through fuel pumps when it gets cold, do they??

The more reason to avoid running your tank till empty, better fill it up when still 1/4 full, the downforce of the weight of the remaining fuel in the tank will help the pump to get the fuel to the front of the car.

hi, just a quick question.the fuel pump under the back seat, did you get a whining noise from it? there is on mine and its refused to start a few times.when ignition is on you can hear this whining noise and when driving its still there, only when its not wanting to start i dont hear any noise.

For me it looks as the pump is on it's way to the scrapyard. When there is no whining to hear it probably is not working and thus not whining and thus not providing fuel as as it should ? Just my idea of course.

What year TD4 is it, early ones had pump in tank later ones have pump O/S/R wheel arch. General opinion is that Auction site pumps are rubbish and fail after a short time, better to buy from LR as you'll only need to change again if you buy from auction sites.
