Okay, I know there's been a LOT of threads on this subject, but by all accounts there has also been a LOT of different choices & personal opinions made.
To begin with, I recently bought a KONNWEI OBDII/EOBD KW808, where it was advertised as useable for every vehicle. It isn't. It's for petrol vehicles only. Sigh. Beware! KW808 PICTURE.jpg
So, everyone, what is the best Diagnostic Reader for a diesel FL1, and how does it compare by price with the others? I take note, that, Lynx uses a laptop - I think, whereupon the display is infinitely better than a Hawkye. But how does it compare for its efficiency?
And while I'm on the subject of machines that connect to the OBDII, can anyone recommend a machine for correcting/altering the recorded mileage, again, for a FL1?
And, just for a treat, I'm including a picture of one of my old-birds. 4 engines, v-12's each, and 3.5 litres each cylinder. That's like an old Rover 3.5 car engine in each cylinder. Can you imagine that? I miss 'em all.KW808 PICTURE.jpg Shackelton WL756.jpg

It depends on the year of your fl1. Mine is eodb compliant but it's a 2006. Also depends of you only want to read generic codes or are after something that can talk to abs, airbags etc. I have a generic elm327 and it's OK. Reads some live data as well as engine error codes. Cost about £4 and then another 6 I think for the full version of torque for my phone.

Why would you want to put the mileage back on you mot mileage is recorded and sent to the dvla so I would advise against it as my Friend had a letter asking why his mileage was much lower on the car a year later and the truth was his odometer was definitely playing up so he got a second hand one and put the whole thing in luckily he kept the old speedo and was able to give them the old and new number

All post 2000 petrol Freelander's are OBD2 compliant, so any OBD2 reader will show fault codes. The diesel FL1 didn't become OBD2 compliant until after the facelift came about.

If you want more comprehensive code reading of multiple systems the you have the Lynx, Icarsoft and Hawkeye.

A shackleton:D I remember those maritime patrol , one came in with no undercarriage once luckly he got them down:eek:
I'm wondering where you saw the Shack with no undercarriage? Hmmm.
We once had a complete hydraulic failure, where we flew round-and round over the Humber for about 30 min's, during a Friday afternoon. Each & every airfield in Lincolnshire closed down on us. None wanted to run the risk of an aircraft loaded with high-octane AvGas (Avation Gasoline) crash-landing on their runway, which would have destroyed the modern-day asphalt in a flash of fire and no doubt incinerated us to dust. We had been on route to a Navy base for an exercise, but needed to land asap. No hydraulics meant a lack of control. I recall my oppo' was as white as a snow-flake as we decended. Ah, what the hell, we had 3-greens on the undercarriage so I was okay with it.
We did land, successfully, after blowing down the undercarriage with compressed air. The Station-Commander of the airfield we landed at was most unimpressed, and severely treated us to his nasty wrath. Great times. Fun too. The bar was nearly drunk dry! So working on a Freelander is a dawdle, in comparison. Safer as well. lol

As I have predominantly MG/Rover based cars at the moment, I have a pscan. Reads the ECU on our ZTT 2.0CDTI a treat, despite it being Pre-EOBD compliant (2003) - it has the same M47R engine as your FL1 :)

A place called binbrook it was a fighter base at the time now sadly shut down:( like I say he managed to get down in one piece :D

If you want to alter the mileage, you'll need a full on land rover unit or T4 compliant unit.
I replaced my binnacle with a second hand unit and now read about 20,000 miles less than it should. The DVLA haven't bothered as it shows up on the M.O.T that the mileage was altered.
I could get the brother in law to plug it in and alter it (He has a T4 unit) but why bother?
Cheaper units like icarsoft are ok, but very limited, mine won't speak to the autobox. Hawkeye's always get a good review, but the screens small. The Lynx system is very flexible as it will talk to your laptop/ phone, but I don't believe it will alter the mileage.

TLO, Flaming-heck ... that was me and my mates (crew). We were treated like scum by the resident Station Commander, simply because we chose the nearest airfield to land at. I could never remember the name, Binbrook, for some strange reason. Perhaps it's because I never wanted to see the freezing place again. I previously visited with my Vulcan Squadron during earlier years, and it was always cold.
We were forced to park our kite onto a dispersal so far from the Hangers and all the other buildings, and all without any transport offered. Accommodation was the worst ever too. It was the beginning of January, mid-80's, and extremely cold. One of our group was flown back to RAF Lossiemouth as he collapsed with the intense chill, while the few us (3) were left to repair and salvage the aircraft. And even after we repaired the hydraulics, our number 2 engine dropped-a-valve on start-up. This in-turn meant replacing the engine, in the freezing & windy Lincolnshire cold with numb hands and all the other associated body parts. The NAAFI bar's income must have been boosted that week as we sat at a bar table to do all our paperwork.
If I could meet that Station Commander now... ! He'd regret it.
Anyway, all good times with excellent camaraderie and fantastic memories. So, where were you on the airfield? And did you watch us coming in?

One of my favourite memories was flying over the same dams that had been attacked in WWII, by the 617 (Dambuster) Sqdn. I sometimes wonder what the locals thought as we thundered overhead in an aircraft that resembled a Lancaster. We often flew across Germany at only 350 feet altitude, which was quite something. We didn't drop any bombs though. We did drop paper-cups onto Soviet ships in the North Sea & Atlantic Ocean, with little insulting anecdotes (in Russian) written on them. Anyfink for a laugh @ the Commies.
Happy days. :)

Thanks, erm, Mike. Are you really skinny? Just kidding. I used to be, but the years have caught up with me.
The reason I'm looking at altering the mileage is because I'm about to drive to the UK, and my mileometer only indicates Kilometres. I'm considering replacing it with one that shows both MPH & KPH. My car has only 105k Km's on the clock and do not wish to fit something that may show something much, much higher. My car is like new and will remain so, as long as I own it and am able. For instance, yesterday, I replaced the front brake-pads. And when I do any work on my car tend to go OTT. I'm attaching a picture or 2 to let you see what I do.

I do have a GPS driven HUD (Head-Up-Display) that I can use, but to be perfectly honest would prefer a bezel that displays the miles & kilometres, as standard.
Anyway, that's my reasoning.

Yes, I am. I'm one of those irritating buggers that can eat anything and everything. I thought it would change with age, but I'm here at 47 and still thin. One day I'll wake up looking like Jabba the hutt:)
That's an odd one with the KPH/ MPH, I'd think that a straight swap would be easiest, but a new binnacle won't be cheap. The second hand one I got was £30, but took a fair bit of part swapping and cleaning to make it look ok.
Maybe talking to a good independent LR garage when you get here would be the best option.
I've just had a look and can't find a new binnacle listed, but a dealer might know how to get one.

RAF fire crew mate and yes I watched you I remember because I was on TACR1, I remember the station co for some reason he had the station on exercise for for what seemed like most of the time :p and you are right it was dam cold in winter . You must have been on the opposite side of the airfield to were the QRA sheds were ,as far as I know they are not there now neither is the runway ect, they were given back to the farmer but the pans and buildings are still there apart from ATC and the fire section believe it or not they were burnt down .We were supposed to be sharing QRA with wattisham and lossiemouth but it seemed we were for ever on call:DWe had an open day once and the night before we had a good look round the static display and one of the kites was the Vulcan the bombed port Stanley still got that photo some were it also had the bombs painted on the side of the cockpit .I have been back since once I took my son up to see the place it was in a sorry state:(
