Hello,

I've seen endless battery topics on here over the years, but the search isn't bringing anything up . Anyway, it's one of the usual questions. I could do with a new battery, my current block only holds enough charge to spin the thing over once if I'm lucky and then pluurrr, it's drained. I don't want an expensive battery. I've seen those 'gel' type red top / yellow top batteries on Paddocks but they're £128 and I dont get this whole deep cycle bollocks, could someone please explain? Halfords have one for about £85 with a 5 year guarentee but it claims to be a Calcium battery - are these any good? What do I go for!!!??? Primarily for starting - I don't have many, well any gadgets to drain the battery when the engine issn't running.

Cheers

find out where the local farmers get their battery's for their tractors from, and buy the biggest one that'll fit in your battery compartment

DONT buy one from Halfords

I'll have a go at re-conditioning my battery first. I've just been reading a few articles on the net and I've watched a few videos on youtube too. Looks like I need some distilled water and ten teaspoons of Epsom Salts to dissolve into a paste which I'll pour into the cells and then top up with distilled water. I'll also dissolve some carbonate of Soda into some water to clean up the terminals and the leads. If that fails to improve my starting power, I'll buy a new one :)

yu do not want a leisure battery - it is designed for a totally different cycle rate.

go for the biggest CCA battery you can - Calcium is better. Just compare prices and warranty in the same CCA batteries.

I'll keep me eyes open for the mushroom over York****e, it will look spectacular against the backdrop of the meteor shower we're s'pos'd ter be havin!!!

As already said - its CCA (cold cranking amps) that are important. In this case more is definitely better. Get the biggest one you can physically fit into the battery box with the largest CCA rating.

Leisure batts are for caravans/motor homes etc. that draw relatively low current over extended periods such as when using voltage invertors to watch TV. You'll kill a leisure batt very quickly if used as a cranking battery.

"Leisure batts are for caravans/motor homes etc." Spot on.

But these Numax are superb, maybe they use leisure as term for a past time as opposed to the type of battery it is, If that makes sense, who knows. But they turn the engine over easily (as long as everything is alright), and you can do plenty of winching. I've known 2 of these and a split charge system work very well on a electrically laden 110.
