Anyone know which alternator fits my Defender 200Tdi, with Lucas type 3 spade connector plug? Looking online there seem to be other fittings and suppliers all have a photo of the front of the alternator!

Many types/versions but main difference between most is the amps output, some have the 3 pin plus and later ones have the main power lead held on with an M6 nut, ie 10mm spanner size, theres also universal ones that will fit either car.
Ebay search A127 alternator, if yours has the plug buy the plug version and if yours has the nut version buy that.
My 1993 200tdi has the nut version, slightly earlier disco engine has the plug variety.
Doesnt matter what hand you buy as 5 minutes with a spanner will sort it.

It's the plug version, I was hoping to buy online but might need a phone call or two to suppliers.

I thought all Lucas A127 alternators are plug type, I'm pretty sure they are. What amperage is it Wattfield? I brought mine to an autoelctrician, it took him a couple of hours and it cost me just a few quid, or you can rebuild them your self, **** easy, parts are cheap , lots of you tube vids to walk you through.

I rang him as I had a questions, he was happy to help out, from what he said I understand he also sell the same unit but with the plug connector you are looking for.

Cheers

... and I'm not sure if it's worth an upgrade to 65 amp, given that I don't have any extra electrics!

I doubt it would make any difference to be fair, some people think upgrading the wiring has to be done but unless you are pulling more amps there is no need. I have a 45 amp and it works fine with lights, heater and wipers on, it does put my volt meter right down to the bottom end of normal though and the battery does take a battering. If I had the choice Id go 65 amp, or 75 , Its just that I had mine rebuilt which was a 45 amp one to begin with. Is yours totally knackered? I thought I had a knackered battery last week, I pulled all the wiring from battery to starter, cleaned everything up including battery terminals , earths and starter contacts and it turns over like a new one now. Even a battery tester said my battery was kaput.
