Good morning,

my question has a rather complicated intro, so bear with me.

I am a German who works with a development organisation in Ghana, but moves to Kenya next year and needs a new car there. Switch from left hand to right hand driving...

In Ghana, I drive a Nissan X-Trail (ugh!). Due to the YEN/EUR exchange rate it was cheap two years ago, that's why. The rate has reversed, the same car now costs 10k Euro more! So, I started looking for something else.

I now have an offer for a brand new Freelander from one of these companies that supply international organisations with cars at supposed discount rates. However, they gave me an offer that is only about 1000 Euro cheaper than if bought my Freelander directly at list price.

I said, it was going to be complicated, sorry. Now the question(s)!

How much discount do you usually get if you buy a new Freelander at Land Rover in UK? In Germany, common discount rates are about 10-15%, depending on the car. If I buy in car in UK and export it to Kenya, can I deduct the VAT? Does anyone know a Land Rover dealer who has experience with exports of the kind?

Thanks from a potential LR newbie,

Michael

It should be VAT free as it isnt being used in the UK. You will have to pay import/export tax I think.

Most of the major UK dealers will be able to advise you on export too.

Enjoy :)

I used to work with a guy who shipped a V8 discovery from S.Africa to NI.

I think he said it was £2k for the shipping container, which included his personal belongings, furniture etc inside the 30ft container.

His wifey was a doctor and they needed to move back to SA

Rather than sell it (local dealer only offered £1500) he shipped it back again with him ...................a proper car enthusiast :D

A private sale followed by shipping freight company is your best bet, could take weeks in transit??

Thanks, I just browsed through several used car sites in the UK, including Land Rover's own car market (btw: any recommendations on car sites?). A used car could be a good alternative, the range offered is immense. Among the greatest advantages: other than a brand new factory car, a used one is immediately available.

Shipping will take weeks, thats right, about 4-5. I just checked some guys who offer shipping to Kenya. The boat apparently leaves twice a month from Sheerness (where is that? I am so not familiar with UK), price is about £1k, plus, of course, the hazzle with customs down there.

Check what the tax is. Back 5 years ago, you'd be looking to pay 50% tax on the value of an imported vehicle into Mombassa.

The other option is keeping the vehicle on a carnet and driving the vehicle over the boarder every 2 or 3 months to keep the carnet valid.

Also, not being funny but you may want to reconsider using a Freelander2 out there. You'd be better off having a vehicle which you can aquire lots of (cheaper) aftermarket parts inless you are planning to keep the vehicle parked outside the your big house in Karen or Langata!
