Hehe, this is certainly a silly question but since I haven't been able to find an answer by searching, I gotta ask :)

What/where are my front position lamps? And how do I make sure that they are working? I've never come across this term before.

:D does that mean I'm immortal? I just realised that I don't know what is sidelights. I'm not taking a ****, honestly. The left lever on my steering wheel has 3 positions - Low beam close range, Low beam far range and High beam (with the blue indicator)... so...puzzled!!!

No honestly not. My MOT Refusal certificate says: "Front position lamps not working" and I've got no idea how to fix it... I cannot say I'm having much more clarity after this thread. Just checked all three positions of the lever and they all seem to be working... :( :(

The front position lights are the side lights. If your side lamps work it should not have failed.

your disco probably has dim dip.... if the ignition is on turning on the sidelight (position lights) also send a low voltage to the dip beams to give a dim dipped beam.
on a disco 1 the dip and main beam are in a h4 halogen bulb,,, three spade terminals under a rubber cover on the back of the headlight... the position lamps are a smaller bulb with 2 wires .. just pushes into a hole in the rear of the headlight.

Matt Baxter, you're a star. Got it at last! They are indeed faulty. I'm hoping this is as easy as to replace the bulbs. How do I know which bulb to check?

ricc, just noticed your post. Thank you, will check it tomorrow. It now kind of makes sense :)

i prefer to call them parking lights as thats all they are good for and thats what they used to be called, too many tits use them for driving.

how do yo drive with the ignition off ?

to confuse even more, my 4 year old lad when talking about which headlights are on, we call them-

little little ones - ignition off, side lights on
little ones - ignition on, sidelights on
little big ones - ignition on, dipped headlights
big ones - ignition on, main beam on
big big ones - we dont have them, there on roof bars.
