Just after some thoughts on possible causes. Nsf went in early march destroying the hub, so i replaced the whole axle end + shaft from a mates scrapper 300. Just found today that this 'new bearing' has gone as well. So is there a possible cause, or just ****e luck? It's a 200 with +2", 255/85 tyres on wella wheels this time, 235/85 on disco steels first time it went
Cheers

Realise that, don't know history of the donor, but it were a minter with low mileage. Just weren't sure if there could be some other factor of the car that could cause it, with it being 2 in a month. Or just bad timing. Got a timken to go on, don't want that to pop in a few weeks time

Have you been off roading? When you replaced did you fit the rear oil seal correctly? I have just done both my front bearings, I use mine off road a fair bit and they soon fill up with grit and mud, this will kill bearings very quickly...

When you replaced the axle, did you wash out the wheel bearings and then repack them with grease?

Did you 'load' the wheel bearings correctly with just enough tightness on the large hub nut?

With the new Timken bearing, you know you have to really pack it with grease before installation, don't you? You can't use it straight from the packet.

Wheel bearings are a consumable on a Landy :D you end up changing them nearly as often as the oil if you do a lot of offroading.

I would say it was bad timing. Stick a new one in see how that goes :)

I agree with the other posters, you replaced with an unknown quantity second-hand part then wonder why it's gone again!

I wouldn't take a chance with a wheel bearing, last time one went on me was towing the caravan with wife and kids in the Disco. The NSR bearing went and welded itself to the stub axle .. locked wheel and all that!

Don't be tight, buy a new wheel bearing set and fit the proper seals and gaskets when doing the job! Or if you can't (no shame, some people aren't mechanical) get someone to do it for you!

Cheers all, mud & crap offroad makes sense now... My old bearing welded to hub also, hence swap from donor - undid 7 bolts from swivel to axle joint n swapped whole lot, shaft as well. I'm pretty competant so realise about all the rules of bearings for the swap, will be having a mechanic with me as i do it anyway. Replacement is a complete set, even down to paper flange gasket. Was literally after the 'mud n grit' type suggestion. Still learning after 2 years :D cheers all!

Heh, have fun .. ;)

Just been out and heard a UJ 'cracking' .. I think !!

... it never ends!
