Okay folks have just been working on my daughters 2004 TD4 HSE. Have managed to fit the EGR delete, some of the hoses replaced on the Inlet side of things(got two more to fit) new PCV valve and Assembly the other had been 'bodged'. Also separated th fuel rail sensor connectors a gave them a goi over with some contact cleaner spray. Car had been driving poorly, lots of grey and black smoke(and I mean LOTS) on acceleration. Poor performance, no power. After clean clean fuel rail connectors I w out in it an it drove perfectly for about 30 Km on all kind of roads. On the way back started started behave poorly poorly before. Now just Carried out of leak back test, not too positive, all injectors are leaking back differing amounts so looks like a refurbish is in order. Two other things, I can no here t fuel pump priming from within the cabin. Also there is a sound like a jet fighter starting up under the bonnets from below t ECU housing and also, on switch off off sounds like a computer fan is working around there too, for about 2-3 minutes. That ha never happened up until last night. Finally I have found an 'exhaust' under under front passenger side just infront of the F/R wheel, where warm air was being 'expelled' and I think this is related to a

'jet fighter sound'? Can someone tell me what it is, can't find it in the Haynes manual....I hopeful attach the photo of the 'exhaust'...

its a fuel burning heater

Thanks very much, I thought it was something along those lines but I'm still finding 'optional extras' on this car. My daughter will be pleased but to me it's just something else to worry about.....So long as it doesn't blow up I'm happy...Just wondering why it's started to work now, don't know how to switch it on or off or whether it kicks in with just the heater controls....It has never come on before.

Mind you, the way things are going, maybe it would be a good thing if it 'blew up'.........

Haha thanks Col, but someone has already beaten you to it..........However, stranger things have happened and as I try to fix things more issues crop up.....S'pose once you start digging.....???

read the link in my post ,they should only come on when its cold,so theres an issue somewhere

those fuel burning heaters are ok when the work properly but on my old freelander I got fed up with it being on for a long time I pulled the plug on it but you can get a timer for it or even a remote switch for it.

the only reason mine started playing up was when I touched it so I am in very good company:D on a plus it went straight through the mot today you have no idea how worried I was about that

I'd love to get one of those heaters for my series landy but they seem to be very expensive. I'm still thinking about a wood burner but I doubt the wife would be willing to get up early to light it.

You can buy a FBH from a FL1 for about £60. Very easy to make it fit other vehicles. Make sure you get one from a FL1 though as later LR FBH and other manufacturers use more sophisticated controls to run them. The FL1 uses a simple pin high to run principle and has in integral water pump. ;)

Sorry but I have to ask the question .....why ? another thing to go wrong but then again I am a glass half empty kind of guy:D

Quick update on this and other foibles, did a leak back test and the injectors, over a 3 minute engine run, gave back 4.5, 5.5, 7.5 and 6.0 ml's of fuel so they are running out of spec, I believe (10% difference between each injector approx??) This would indicate that they need refurbishing/replacing etc etc. Advice on this welcome..... also, spent some time at the back end and removed the fuel pump assembly and had a look about, changed the fuel filter for a MAHLE. The filter that was in it was a MANN which, although good quality was too long for the holder buy about 8mm...cleaned off the earth that fits in the filter housing (in the hole on the side) and the connector also, took the sediment apart(out of curiosity) cleaned the mounting plate and re assembled it all. There is paperwork which suggests that the fuel pump and filter were replaced just a couple of years ago. The bottom of the car, esoecially the tank 'cage' is fairly corroded but not holed, the tubing is intact but I need to get under it to clean it all up and put some protection on it before the winter...might be looking at replacing before the next MOT (summer next year). The same goes for all the suspension components and brake lines in that area. Luckily, I'm a lazy so and so.....so don't mind laying on my back and thinking of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland...

Leak back isn't the whole story with injectors. Mine leak back all over the place. My engine runs just fine and was clean as a whistle on the emissions test at yesterday's MOT.
Spray pattern is much more important than how much fuel the injectors spill. ;)

However it does sometimes follow, that excessive spill coincides with a bad spray pattern.

Phone a fairly local deisel specialist (Patersons of Dunfermline) and they wouldn't go further than a quote for a 'function' test(my words, can't remember their exact terminology) so they can then do a 'refurbish(hopefully) that test was 67 quid, just to find out that my injectors are probably 'shagged'(my words, not theirs) so........pondering my next move...between my last post and this one i removed the MAF(fiddly) and cleaned it..(I remember Nodge saying he didn't put much stock in that but did it more out of curiosity) Took me best part of two hours, mainly as I dropped the torx screw when reassembling.........stoney ground makes for a difficult search....anyway, all back together again ready to remove the injectors if needs be. Loads of grey smoke on initial acceleration follow by a pretty decent smoke screen that any Soviet era tank gbrigade commander would be proud of....

Thats my era...none of your Smart phone loving gender nuetral rubbish here you know....Right, off to try on my new dress...
