What's the best front axle for my 200tdi

I managed to get a complete 2002 TD5 axle for the rear which was good:).

The front Axle is off a 110 (unknown year). I fitted new discs and calipers and whilst it was all apart I replaced the swivel seals and stuck in some of that one shot stuff.
Sadly though the swivels are leaking like a sieve:mad:.
I kinda just want a decent front axle so looking for a TD5 one again.

Will it fit ok?

Are there better options?
 
I like my 90 axle (not defender) its a 10 spline at the diff but the CV's are stronger and ashcroft do, do a 24 spline conversion all the strength and not much (too much) outlay. Jai

Kind of depends on what you are going to go with it :)

I have a 24 spline D110 axle in the front of my Discovery and it has survived winch challenge events.

My advice would be to fit new swivels to that axle and run with that. An axle number off the casing will help when getting parts.....if you get parts over the counter from a good man and not do it via mail order ;)

The swivels look fine so I guess I just cocked up fitting the seals somehow:(

If a Defender TD5 front axle came along though would I need different radius arms or prop?

Also do any disco axles fit?
 
Defender Td5 front axle, radius arms ok, not sure on prop, but shouldn't be a major issue anyway.

The rear mounting for a Disco2 axle (Watt link) will require modifications to your chassis to fit them. The front axle has different mounts at the chassis end, but IIRC the axle ends are the same. Personally I wouldn't bother for most off road uses, altho D2 axle are popular in LR based off racer motors now-a-days.
 
I totally agree too many clubs use tight gates lock to lock especially around here. Really a 109 should be able to drive the driven line around any trials course without hitting any gates. The terrain should be the limiting factor but some sites require a wee bit more thinking than others. I also Lay out Tyros, RTV's and CCV's regularly. I heared that Disco II axles gain slightly more lock to lock aswell as having much better Bushes for Comping. Jai
 
careful with the radius arms,......get the ones that come with the td5 axle if you can as they are slightly wider on a td5 axle and require different bushes to those of an older axle,......you can make 'em fit but only after alot of bashing of the ears on the axle casing to widden them out to receive the td5 radius arms. found out from experience and a knowledgeable chap

Thanks for that. I thought there was a difference. So the 200 radius arms will be a bit too lose. Axle and arms then:)
 
td5 defender diffs are weaker then 300s IMO. i've bust 3 in my disco now,and i don't hammer it. i also see them busted on road cars at work, problem seems to stem from the cross pins in the diff being retained by roll pins rather then circlips like earlier diffs. the roll pins don't allow the cross pins to rotate hence they get less lubrication, this then leads to wear on the diff centre casting which in turn lets the pins move back and forth till they snap. i'm now running 300tdi 90 diffs, they are 24 spline but centre pins are circliped in rather then roll pinned. sad to say i'm seeing 30000 mile td5 diffs let go on motors that have never seen mud, i fitted my diffs thinking that as they were low mileage and i always look after them, they'd last for ages.....DOH!!!
 
honest i don't!!! last one packed up on m42 coming back from south wales at the weekend. having said that 3 hours before that it was towing a 27ftx10ft static caravan 5 miles through the valleys lol. don't give it much hammer when i'm laning, used to run 300 diffs in my challenge truck and didn't break one, well not til i fitted arb lockers and 4.7 ring and pinions then crownwheels stripped like cheese.
