Whats the best battery to use on a p38 2.5 bmw deisel?

Ive been having starting problems and allsorts and am gonna change the battery

Also i have heard of people with twin battery setups.. Are they anygood? how do I set it up..?

Hi. Unless you intend running winches or loads of high current accessories there shouldn`t be any need for twin batteries. Also suggest try checking out previous threads about battery drain, alternators etc. A good new battery has gotta be a good thing but make sure you have no underlying problems.

Cheers for the reply mate..

I have a 1990 classic v8 with a good battery.. Its only a 70ah though.. Will that do for the p38.. The one I have in at the moment is a 110ah

The smaller battery may do the job in the summer, but we all know that the time its gonna let you down is a cold winters morning when its got to heat up the glow plugs, turn a 22;1 compression 6 cyl engine filled with cold gluey oil... I don`t know if any make is better than any other... I would personally go for a big known maker, depending on who has any special offers ,sales on at present. Some good prices on line, remembering postage etc is going to be an issue.. Any motor factors near you? If you having starting issues are they sorted yet? Lots of threads covering LOTS of issues. I`ve had my P38 diesel about 4 years. Had some probs but through info on this site all going smooo... touch wood !

PS, make sure you have the EAK code if you have to totally dis connect battery. I`m not trying to teach my granny to suck eggs but am assuming you`re new to the P38. You can do without if it`s not to hand by connecting a spare battery in parallel, but don`t take any risks... the main BECM computor `box` is not cheap.

I used to have a type 072 battery on mine, admittedly its a petrol but I noticed on my mother in laws Range Rover she had a type 664 battery. I replaced mine with that type and its brilliant, mega cold cranking and good amps. It fills the entire compartment for the battery.

The battery is basically a commercial type but it has enough power for all the electrics on the Range Rover as well as a good starting power.

Yeah mate i am new to the p38.. I do have the EAK code though, had to get it when the little lad pressed the button about a million times out of range and imobilised the car..

Whats the type 664 battery mate? what make and where could I find one?

Note. To anyone reading this thread the above battery is for petrol models only, even then they have proved not to be reliable by some members here.

I like the bit where they say "We recycle your old battery for free" I'll bet they bloody do. How much do you get for a scrap battery these days?

Don't touch with a barge pole if your going for a new battery for petrol get one for diesel cranking amps on halfords batteries are not high enough for petrol engine better off with an optima or similar they cost more but cause less hassle

Nothing less that 700 amp. I tried 500 amp batteries and they are pointless and never last very long.
Spend the extra money on a good high CCA battery and you'll never worry about it again.

Have you checked with a main dealer to see how much an OEM battery is?
My original diesel battery lasted about 7 or 8 years. May not be much in the price if you can wangle some discount.

LRO did a thing on batteries a couple of months ago and NUMAX came out as a cracker for performance and price. Optima gel batteries seem to be the way to go from what I can tel from performance tests. Hope that's a help cos cranking up a diesel takes a lot of "oomph"
