What tools do you all carry?

Where the winches aren't.
I pick up my III this weekend and of course I don't expect it'll ever, ever break down!

However, whatever vehicle I've driven from new to ancient I always carry essential tools with me. These are usually things I've found from (bitter) experience that I wished I'd had with me when something untoward goes ping (that said I've toured around Europe & North Africa on bikes ranging from Guzzi's right back to a 1973 Harley & except for essential maintenance the only times I've ever got my tools out has been to fix other peoples bikes!)

What do you all carry (sensibly, I'm not taking an engine hoist!) or what items have you learned the hard way to carry with you?

I'd guess a lot depends on where your going. I'm going to be driving from the UK to Bulgaria at some point, but for now what would you all advise not leave home without?.........Got AA cover!

Other than the normal jack and wheel-brace, I carry two small tool boxes. One full of spanners and a socket set, the other with odd items like pliers, scissors, hammer and a small multi-meter.

Having said all that, the only thing I remember ever needing out on the road was a roll of insulating tape. You would be amazed the things it can be used for.

It's always a bit of a trade off what tools you carry. But as I'm in the AA I never worry too much about it. Nice if you can just pick up the right spanner to tighten that loose nut without calling them though.

Hiya Marcus, apart from a basic tool kit as andy1702 said, I would get my hands on a copy of the Haynes Manual. Also keep a small torch in the Landy aswell because if its going to break, it'll break in the dark! I find a couple of rags also come in handy.

Diamond, thanks both. You've both listed the kind of items I tend to carry so I guess I must be on the right lines.............I know what you mean about insulation tape too Andy, invaluable stuff!

Do Haynes do a III manual then? Tops if they do, I've got a way in depth workshop manual on CD, but didn't really fancy printing the whole thing off for use in the truck though.

That said, back safely after 400 miles & "Nelly" didn't miss a beat. The roads through Snowdonia are FANTASTIC! A glorious drive from Anglesey to Bournemouth.........Now, where's that mud?

Cheers,
Marcus.
