What to look for when purchasing!!!!

Hey all,

Please could i have some words of advice. i have found a great Range Rover but i am concerned about getting stung. What should i look for when i go to see it? is there anything major that is likely to go wrong that will cost my left arm to repair? Is the reliability really as bad as everyone says? is this perfect seeming (slightly high mileage) well priced car going to cost too much to run? (it does have an LPG conversion!)

Any advice greatly appreciated!

not like going to a car if you can find some body to go with you who has or had a r/r you may have a chance h/g is big problem and the list goes on how high is milage? goodluck if you put where you are some body may offer to help j
 
there are plenty of postsa on here about the subject of buying. do a search and read up!

the main one is coolant loss, now, check it, check it again and then just to be sure check it another ten times. you need a long run in it, get it nice and warm, check the level before and after and also let it cool. it'll be worth putting a tenner in the lpg just to have the long drive( make out you know nothing about filling lpg) get him to show you how to fill up!

now thats done, check for coolant loss, and continue to do the normal checks you'd do on any car. push every button, fiddle with every cubby hole lid etc, check for coolant loss.

check for coolant loss, then check all the electrikery works as it should. no obvious smoke/steam from exhaust? check coolant level is ok, and check for coolant loss. then check for bubbles in coolant.

check for signs of heads bieng off recently, check for coolant loss, check top hose for excess pressure, check for coolant loss.

now, if you are sure there is no coolant loss, you should be ok to procede to the general checking of body and trim!

once you are happy the car is ok and you have a price in mind, check for coolant loss!

now go check for coolant loss, and look at any history. you can check the history online of the mot's so take your laptop(if you have one, or give me a bell/text with the reg and document reference number from the v5 logbook) and go here

then if you are totally satisfied the car is for you, check for coolant loss, and hand him the cash.

oh, one last thing check for coolant loss

well if the op hasnt got it yet then he's a dumb ass and shouldnt get a range rover!!

but just to compound the fact, check everything 3 times, check for coolant loss even more!!
 
On a slightly more seriouse note...... what flavour and vintage of Range Rover are we talking about here?

Classic? P38? L322? all have different problem areas to look for.

I presume, since you say it has LPG, its a V8...... manual or Auto? Early 3.5 carb, later 3.5/3.9EFi or 4.0/4.2/4.6 GEMS? (or in the case of L322, Jag!)

With the words 'Range Rover' you are covering 40 years of possible vehicles of widely differing specification........

On older vehicles, you should be looking for rot, on later ones, niggling electrical faults, on P38's........... every-bloody-thing!

Cant really be much more specific and give you targets, unless you give us a bit more of a clue to the shape of the animal!
 
If you dont know much or anybody who know about Range Rovers then its worth the extra money to have a inspection done buy the RAC, i once watched a RAC inspection and they dont miss any tricks.

I have had mine 5 years and realy its been no more trouble than any other car i have owned, when thease vehicls are running ok there is no other vehicle like them
