Hi all,

I becoming convinced that my 2014 Disco HSE has been used as a tow vehicle by its previous owner as the rear of the car just feels a bit soft/wallowy and appears to make the car rock from side to side over some surfaces at low speed.

The car has done 70k miles and was supplied with a tow bar that has clearly been used.

I was thinking of replacing the springs first but wondered if you guys had any suggestions on this?

Thank in advance,

DC7

hi and welcome

if i may say the first thing to check would be the tyre pressures

are u getting any knocks when braking / steering

when ur driving down the motorway does it wander at all plse

then start checking wishbone bushes, ARB, drop links for any wear and tear

i’ve just replaced the front struts on my D3 and did make the world of difference but indeed need to ensure all the bushes etc are all sound first

will u be looking after it urself or garage , if ur unsure how to check them please feel free to ask and can guide u through it

hope that helps a little

Is this your first disco as they arent exactly pin sharp like say an Audi/Bmw etc?

Tbh I would be surprised if anything need changing on a 2014 70k motor, only thing thats going to go is the front lower arms and if you have even tyre wear and theres no clonking when you stamp on the brake at low speed then they are most likely good.

You do know they are on full air suspension? so there are no mechanical springs as such.

Hi, many thanks for the replies.

For info, I've had Range Rovers in the past (2005, 2008 and 2016 models) but this is my first Discovery. I must admit our other current cars are a 911 and a GT-R so I do wonder if it's just me being used to things firmly sprung.

It seems fine on the motorway and just seems really soft at the rear at slowish speed. As an example, as you turn into my road which is off camber there is a small bump where a drain is and this seems to upset the car making it rock from side to side for a good few metres after. Is this usual?

The Disco is running Pirelli Scorpions which whilst fairly worn seem to have done so evenly. There are no obvious knocks or graunches at all either.

If there is anything wrong I'd take into a specialist and there are a couple near me. But I'll check tyre pressures and have a look at the bushes first.

Oh, and yes, I completely forgot it was all air and no springs

Pirelli scorpion zero or pirelli scorpipn ATR?
Atr are the mutts nuts and last well, zeros are weird things and cause all sorts of pulling issues when they are worn.
Atr good for 30/40k\
Zero 15k at best though one guy on the D3 forum is on 23k and they are still not half worn, but he is defo the exception.

They are Zeros. The rears are nearly due for replacement (negotiated in the deal) and the fronts have maybe 3mm tread.

thks, not ur first landy then, lol

one easy way to test top wishbone bushes is , put the disco into access height , then grab the top of the tyres and pull / push them to see if u get any movement , if u do that will be worn wishbones bushes

if u wish to and before i forget i found some info in how to turn the keyless entry off, is on top of this disco section

Yep 15k was not impressed!
Before the D3 Ive always owned live axle land rover where tyre life can be measured in decades.
D1 Michelins 40k and still life left
D2 Micehlins again 40k and still life left
90 just never seemd to wear, again Michelins

Sounds like bad shocks which on those are unfortunately part of a combined air susp strut.
If the previous owner had a lot of weight in the back or on the tow bar they may well be tired.

funny enough u can actually just change the shock but i wouldn’t like to mess around like that

indeed when i replaced my front struts i replaced the whole air strut , made the world of difference

will be interesting to see when we get feedback from the OP if the bushes are failing ??

Afternoon guys,

Okay, I don't think the bushes are failing. There is no apparent movement when on access mode, so it may be the air strut or shocks as mentioned above.

Something else I noticed yesterday is that after I go over a speed bump the car continues to bob up and down three or four times after. Also, when lowered suspension the camber of the wheels looks slightly odd to me (top in bottom out) but this may be normal.

If it is the aforementioned, what sort of costs am I looking at?

I'm tempted to get it into a specialist or main dealer to have a proper diagnosis. I'm near Godstone (Jtn 6, M25) if anybody has recommendations. I've used this place on occasion and they seemed okay - http://www.millenniumcroydon.co.uk/

On a very separate note, fuelling it is a real pain as the whichever fuel station I use the pump just keeps clicking and clicking, so it takes ages. I've moved the pump around in the hole but it makes no difference so it seems like some sort of air lock issue. I'll post a new thread unless one of you guys knows the issue...

hi

worn bushes will make it wander down the motorway, cornering and knocking

it does sound like worn struts , am wondering if my code reader would work on urs, mines a D3

i’ve just replaced my front struts , ur looking around £300 for a pair of struts , seen plenty of other paying around 1k to have there struts replaced , took me a good few weeks, only because i just took my time and had to order more tools as nuts etc had been rounded off

another thing is possibly a weak compressor

really need that plugging in to get live data readings , can then check gallery pressure of system, calibration of the heights to ensure there correct , along with wheel alignment

can see u ending up with new tyres and struts , but first place to start is getting it plugged in and someone who know what there looking at , parts wise 5-600 plus labour which could be another £500

what was ur tyre pressures in the end

i believe there’s a device in the tank filler pipe to stop u filling it with the wrong fuel, will find the link for u as they sometimes need resetting

u should have the tool in ur glove box, boot etc

Wheels at odd angle when in access mode is normal.
I would say specialist over a main dealer any day.
