Hi all

looking at getting another landy after 15 years abstinence:eek:

It will only get low usage for towing my traction engine to rallies, probably 4 or 5 per year.

It will be a cheap motor, anything that has a sound chassis will do.

What engine is best or worst, the previous ones were all 2.25 petrol drinkers?

Is there an engine i should run a mile from?

Thanks

Dave

gotta agree - a series isn't gonna be ideal to haul the traction engine about... though you could restore it nicely and put it on the stand next to the tracki... would look the part more :)
2.25 are solid engines. will run for ever. but will also drink a barrel of oil (petrol) an hour on tick over and are under powered. I'd be looking at a tdi (200 or 300) if i were you. Maybe a series with a conversion pre-done?

A Diesel gaylander will probably be too expensive if you want something cheap and if you've passed your test since 1st Feb 1997, you would be either just under, or just over the legal limit towing 1600kg. Though, the Freelander is certified to tow up to 2000kg if your license doesn't restrict you.

You could probably pick up a Disco 1 for reasonable money but as others said, you'd need to keep an eye out for rust.

May be worth looking at the Japanese 4x4's too.

Ok, so we set the budget at £2k max, i'm turning up a lot of what look like decent discovery 300tdi's and even a few defender 90's and S3's in good nick.

What would make the best tow car?

I like series as they are a doddle to fix but have ****-poor mpg and are getting very long in the tooth now.

I like defenders because they are still quite easy to fix and look the dogs nuts (typical landy which we all love:p) i dont know about engines or mpg on these.

I like the discovery because they appear to be a bit more car like and can possibly do 25-30mpg, again i dont know about diy repairs on these.

Based on the fact that it wont get too much use and its main use will be to safely haul 1.5tons around, what direction should i focus on??

Dave

Id always go for private, if you know a vague bit about cars. Even if not, I reckon private and get an AA/RAC etc vehicle check on it. But as above, dealers charge way over the odds I reckon. And theyre ****ers. Usually.
