What engine oil do you use?

Whatever's on offer at the supermarket/Lidl/Aldi/Halfords etc ... I change it often enough not to worry about it. It's what we did when racing sidecars and never had an engine problem .. ;)

Think at the moment it has 10/40 in it ... but I've also gone as low as 5/30 ... I also use a little veg oil in the diesel tank and an odd shot of 2 stroke, which are claimed to help clean the engine and improve combustion, and I know there's barely any carbon deposits in the engine (had it apart a while ago) and the oil doesn't blacken so quickly.

I think that is about right. Get the cheapest if you are changing it at low intervals. The 5/30 is probably actually quite good in Northern UK winter temperatures.

Instead of the 2 stroke oil, try the odd shot of Eco Max, or Comma Injector cleaner, I have had good results with both on older diesels, and they are fairly inexpensive, especially the Comma stuff.

Interesting - valid for a 300tdi? How much two stroke then?

Personally, I wouldn't use 2 stroke. I have drained several tanks where people have done this, and found pools of the 2 stroke oil, undissolved in the bottom of the tank.
I rationalise this as it not being designed to dissolve in diesel, but in petrol, which is a more volatile fuel.

@Turboman
Fair enough. I thought these additives were a load of bunkem though. I use premium diesel already (I'm sure she doesn't like supermarket diesel :D)

Not found it to be the case, although there is probably less advantage using them in modern engines, which are designed to use modern fuel.
Eco Max is good stuff, it contains a lubricity additive to give older fuel pumps an easier life, and boosts cetane rating, and cleans the injector system a bit, similar to veg oil.
The Comma injector cleaner is just thin fractions, similar to petrol, but should be formulated not to attack seals in the Injector Pump. It is also dirt cheap.

I think the premium diesel basically contains the additives already, but it is very expensive.

Yeah, I rate Comma stuff ... especially when you can get it at heavily reduced prices .. ;)
